I've never used Uber but I just went on the website and looked at the UK cities it says it covers, then put in some random fare calculators.

It seems to return prices for places nowhere near the city list, so for example Sleaford to Boston (two random places in Lincolnshire).

If I actually signed up would it then say "sorry, but no"? confused

Yup. You'd look for an Uber in Sleaford and the app would say nothing available... (unless Uber are actually in Sleaford of course).

Used it in London and it's good

Played with it in Southampton and I can very rarely spot any cars on the map, and they won't pick me up from my house 5 miles from the centre of town. I guess they'd take me from town to home though

Portsmouth seems to have lots of cars every where, but it is a small island

Anybody offering free access to his bank account by the likes of Uber must be mad.

If you sign up, you've given them permission. If someone hacks Uber's system and steals all your cash, would your bank cover your loss?

Well it's PayPal but apart from that.

The banks systems would flag big / rapid repeated payments to Uber as unusual and block them.

Welcome to the future old man wink

I'm in a biggish city and can get one when needed, except <6am for a station run.

No wonder your brain hurts. You need a foil hat.

Why's that, then?

Someone had a hefty sum removed from his bank account recently in the UK for an Uber ride in Los Angeles. He's never been there in his life. That was an Uber error, not fraud.

This concept is riddled with hazards.

An Uber driver got caught on the tidal causeway for Lindisfarne the other week. I was a) genuinely gobsmacked that anyone could ever be so stupid as to think that their godlike driving skills trump the NORTH SEA FOR fkSAKE but also b) impressed that there was an Uber driver out there in rural North Northumberland!

Someone told me he registered with his debit card. Is that incorrect? Drivers are paid directly into their bank accounts.

Do you know it was Uber rather than someone registering with them using his cc details?

Out of curiosity is your view directed solely at Uber's implementation, or do you not use Paypal, Amazon, or any of the other sites and services who keep payment details on file?

The former.

As I understand it, you set up a continuous authority for Uber to take funds from you at any time, without individual transaction authority. Is that incorrect?

No idea as I've never used them as I can't (premise of thread smile).

I'd have thought as everything is done with their "app" there should be a pretty clear audit trail of any trips claimed to have been made though?

True, but that bloke I mentioned had a hell of a job contacting those he needed to contact to get his refund. I can do without tripe like that in my life.

Then there are horror stories I've heard from users that are a little off-putting. Like the London Uber driver who fell asleep and ran two red lights in one journey and a people carrier over the Snake Pass who had to stop every half mile to top up his coolant and briefly understeered off the road.

I'm sure you can - debit credit or paypal

I generally avoid debit card on websites or apps, plus I get cashback on my c/c

The app stores all your journeys/payments and you get an email with same immediately at journey end - with start and end times, pick up and drop off points, and a map of your journey.

I would be very surprised if any payment goes to driver, I imagine it goes to Uber who take their cut and balance goes to driver

The ability to rate driver and passenger usually weeds out worst of both

I have found on the rare occasion Ihave had an issue Uber refunded fare or part fare (driver took odd route) very quickly and with no quibbles

I use Uber all over the world, it's a great service.
Best was was in Palo Alto when we got picked up in a bright yellow S4. Drive and his wife had both retired from the tech industry and he drove round all day in his S4 and loved it.
In this "hobby" scenario, what's the position with insurance cover, should you be injured?

Uber drivers are being Licenced in London and working in places such as Watford, Luton and I have also seen them in Birmingham.

It's called plying for hire and illegal.

Uber's response is that the drivers are passing through. Very strange when they spend there whole week out of the town that the licenced by.
