I have the misfortune to commute into London every day. For ages we've had to endure filthy, unreliable, 40 yo trains. Couple of weeks ago we all cheered as some new, modem rolling stock pulled into the station to collect us. Finally life would be bearable. Anyway, these new trains have been in service for a couple of weeks and already somebody one of them has been vandalised with spray paint and some of the seats are covered in food, drink etc. Bloke currently sitting next to me smells so badly of BO that it's making my eyes water. I know we should live and let live but in everyday life I'm forced to meet some really scummy, chavvy people who can neither operate a knife and fork, washing machine or bottle of deodorant; most of them in their 20s - 30s.

This country is going to the dogs.

Yep, sounds like my train co. (Southeastern?)

You can add:

People that get on (usually at Grove Park)stood standing facing away from you and farting (at face level) non-stop for the duration of the journey
The obscene cost
The broken Oyster machines that then charge you extra when they don't work...

Its why I now commute by push bike/motorbike - free/60p a day in petrol vs. £9pd on the train - half the time too! (motorbike, even the push bike is quicker!)

Funny you should say that as I have considered it. As a means of transport the train works pretty well, it's just the smelly people who spoil it. My choice I know, just making an observation with the smell of this blokes unwashed arse fresh in my nostrils first thing on a Monday. Thought I'd share.

Trains, like washing up, and terry-towel nappies, should be confined to the third world, or living memory.

My office is right outside the train station. I can see the platform right now. I pity the people who (for example) drive to the park and ride, then bus to the station, then train to Liverpool St, then the underground to wherever, all in their middle-management ("account manager" rofl) blue suits, their company C180d, their gelled hair (at 45 years old), and wafty BO.

Some commuters (who's jobs should surely dictate some sort of personal/professional hygiene) are real scumbags; how you can sit on the train and not smell your own stench is beyond me. They're either devoid of olfactory glands or are just rude, skanky, lazy, selfish wkers. I think the latter.

Train wkers.

Trains. wkers.

One of my pet hates is when grown adults get on during rush hour and decide the best thing to do whilst crammed in face to face with others is to start eating something. There is one lady that gets on and starts munching a bag of crisps at 7:45am - I mean, seriously?! You're a grown adult that is not going to starve to death and you decide to eat crisps in peoples face for breakfast.

Little things like this really really boil my p***

There's a thread on this already...

As a southern rail customer/victim, I get the train to London for work most days. I actually don't find the other passengers that bad, nearly all are well dressed, reasonably considerate and don't smell bad.

One morning I got on to find this young Chinese bloke eating reheated kebab meat from a burger bun, obviously his breakfast! The stench was overpowering but the looks of disgust from my fellow commuters almost made up for it. Last year I also watched a bloke eat a Christmas turkey dinner from a cardboard box, mashed potato, gravy the lot.

True.

It's amazing how many people (probably powerfully-built goatee'd company directors) who, on the rare occasion they use trains or busses, end up jammed in next to Fungus the Bogeyman or one of his relatives. OK, I only use trains and busses a few times a month, but I've yet to encounter any of the noxious specimens that by all accounts make up the vast majority of public transport commuters (of course, it might be me who's the noxious specimen, but I bathe twice a year whether I need it or not, and my morning tuna fish and gorgonzola butty surely can't be that offensive?).

I work in Mayfair, close to Oxford/Regent St. Bike parking is always rammed and I couldn't subject my ZZR to that, wouldn't save me much time either from Befordshire.

A better solution would be for the service operators to reintroduce the outdoor 3rd class carriages for all the people with no sense of self respect or personal hygiene. The fact that 1st class is so expensive and regularly declassified due to over crowded, late running trains makes the temptation to upgrade prohibitive.

Ah, the joys of the capital, I rode my mountain bike seven miles through Cheshire Countryside to work this morning, any flatus was purely from my own supply.

I have been commuting into the city since 2005 which wasn't so bad but Southern have just been appalling for the last 2+ years!

Can't go a week without them ballsing them up in some way or other. The irony was that the other week they were on strike and on the day, the service was better than it had been all week. Trains regularly arrive with less carriages than needed, late, cancelled....the usual.

It seems that the commuter is being punished because Southern are pushing for there to be no conductors so in turn they strike and we get stitched up. I get to pay £3k a year for the privilege, cheaper than many i'm sure!

As for the general public, 80% of them are ok the rest of usually selfish and thoughtless for anyone outside of their little bubble.

It makes you wonder how they get a job, unless he was commuting to beg?

I think you'll find it was a condition of their franchise, imposed on them by the DfT in order to attempt to cut costs.
I'm sure that Southern would have much rather kept the Guards and had the greater public subsidy (they will have known the unions weren't about to lie down over job losses).

I'd much prefer to know we have a driver and guard on board for those occasions where there is a failure and the driver is out placing the detonators to protect the train from another one running up it's arse.
