Infant Car Seat - Mould on Straps
Discussion
I'm after a little advice (and I don't want anyone to mention Mumsnet...). Child number 2 is on the way and I'm sorting through what we need and what we can re-use from number 1 and I assumed the car seat (Cabriofix) would be fine however it's got quite a bit of mould on the straps so I'm thinking that these either need cleaning (not sure if this it's ever going to look like new though from looking on Google) or even better replacing them.
Anyone cleaned / replaced straps or spoken to Maxi Cosi about getting them to do this?

remove straps, put in pillowcase, in the washing machine.
Or scrub with miltons fluid and then mild soap.
Strap material seems to attract fungus.
Thanks to both of you, will try the ideas above althoguh I should have mentioned that the straps aren't designed to be removed from the seat.Or scrub with miltons fluid and then mild soap.

Congrats on pending arrival of number 2. We found the transition of 1 to 2 harder than we found 2 to 3. Fun times ahead, not to put you off but 1 is like a having a pet, 2 like having a zoo.
Anyway, given the three littles ones we have, we deal with a fair amount of car seat cleaning. The belts rarely come off for safety reasons. Best method we found is a to remove all the covers, leaving you with mainly plastic and polystyrene in the car seat. Give all the plastic a wipe over with antibacterial multi surface cleaner (kind of stuff you use in the kitchen is fine).
Then wash the belts using warm water and disinfectant, brushed into the belts to give a good scrub with a nail brush or such like (nylon bristles work best). Once done, clean with a cloth and lots on clean water to squeeze out the cleaning agents. Then repeat with a mix of washing powder and water. Rinse it out as before, and use towels/cloths to press out as much moisture as possible. Lastly keep the seat somewhere warm to dry, or you can use a hairdryer to dry the straps. Give it a few days before using it.
Wash the covers in the machine on a gentle cycle, no conditioner.
Dry and refit. Job done.
