As a youth my dad used to proclaim I'd missed the best part of the day by lounging around in bed (until lunch time)

Now older I'm turning into my dad, I enjoy mornings, some quiet time to myself before the world gets going.

Summer I love the sunrise, winter it's still dark and but snug, getting on the road early, getting to work before anyone else, time to think and plan. Even if no work or urgency I'm up early. I look forward to getting up and that 1st really strong cup of coffee, the one you take as the filter has only just started.

Gotta go now the rest of the household is starting to stir.

With you all the way, I'm in the office every day at least 30 minutes, sometimes up to 90 minutes before the next person arrives and I love that quiet "me" time!

You lot need to drink more and/or get involved with a psycho woman who screws with your mind. Then we'll see who's up at bloody sunrise..

Phew, I thought this thread was going to be some awful intimate and personal disclosure smile

While I wouldn't say I'm a morning person, I do find that my mind is at its clearest first thing on a morning. Whether it's working, making music or listening to music, I find that the extra clarity I have early in the day enhances the experience massively. The OH would sleep 'till 11 every day if she had her way. I recall when we were moving from a rented furnished flat to an unfurnished house and we had a couple of weeks overlap between the properties. We'd ordered a ton of furniture from Ikea which had been delivered. On the Saturday morning I got up and drove down to the new place to start building it all. By the time the phone call came from the OH to say she was up and would be joining me just as soon as she'd had a shower, I'd finished! I hate the feeling that I've wasted a big chunk of my life if I don't get up and achieve something.

I get up and work at 4 a.m. - nobody to break my concentration. 9 a.m and I've just finished for the day. Time for breakfast. smile

OP, it was 7:30 when you posted that, not so early!

I think I've realised that now my mornings start before 7am, even on a weekend thanks to my kids, it does allow you to do a lot more with the day. Pre marriage & children I'd happily snooze until at least 10 on a weekend, even once I'd awake have a leisurely breakfast and watch TV. Nothing really got done until after midday. Thing is though I was up until 1-2am either watching films or out on the beer. Now beer o'clock comes earlier when the kids have their wind down time but I'm also falling asleep on the sofa by 9pm and in bed by 10 so the alcoholism is self limiting.

I remember reading an article in a Mountain Biking magazine years ago suggesting getting up before sunrise on a summers morning, cycling up the nearest hill / mountain, cooking your breakfast and having a hot coffee as the sun comes up. I really like the idea of this but if it is followed by going to work then I think I'd be going to bed not long after the kids in the evening. Something to do when I retire maybe!

I do like an early start, but I also value the opportunity of those days where I can "do nothing" and lounge in bed after a night out, or just after a long week at work.

However when I am camping or similar, nature will have me awake at 6am and a cool summer morning is a lovely time to have the world to myself.

It was the end of my quiet time, the rest of the household were stirring!

I love the magical time and watching the world start to go about there business. e.g. sitting on a quay @ 5am.

I've had colleagues often late, hitting the ground running, it suited them to work late. Not me.

My quiet time is usually between 10pm and 1am. Not a stickler for getting up too early, 7am is pretty much the norm.

I am definitely a morning person. Normally up around 6am in winter. 5am in summer or when it starts getting light.

When I'm working a normal day I'm up at 6:45 and in work for 7:15. The doors are locked and nobody else is in till 8:30 so I find I get a load of paperwork cleared during that time.

But on days off I lapse and tend to rise later. I know I should try to rise earlier as late evening is spent unproductively.

I'm not a morning person, so my quiet time is after 10pm when the kids are asleep, or at least in be, me and the other half catching up with news, planning stuff, discussing future plans etc.

The kids do think it is weird that we can sit together and talk without the TV or laptop on.

What about weekends?

Do you get up at the same time you would during the week?

If so, you're just weird.

When the kids were little they and the wife used to sleep in so I'd get up 6am or earlier and have some me time on the Xbox. When the kids got older and got up earlier it used to be possible to get them to the shops, park and back before the wife woke up so we could do her breakfast in bed on a Saturday.

Now everybody in the house is up by 6am at the latest even on weekends so I miss that time. It is nice to have breakfast together and have a family conversation.

I'd love those hours. What do you do.

Quite often I'm up at 4am to go to work but never home before 2pm and usually a lot later, like the evening frown

A milkman by the sound of things!

And 7:30? Jesus that's not early, I can't remember the last time I got up without it having started with a 5........

I'm a composer, so the quieter the better. (I HATE phones, and nobody rings at 4 a.m.!)
