Just read on another thread a guy who mentioned he hadn't spoke to his Mum and Dad since his late teens (he's married now with kids so I'm assuming being 18 was a long time ago) and has 4 siblings he hasn't spoken to in years.

Of course everyone's different and everyone's family is different but I could never imagine having this happen to me, my family is everything to me and talk to my mum and brother and sister every day.

An old man round the corner from us hasn't spoke to his son in over 10 years because they were bickering while carrying a mattress into the house.

What a way to treat his offspring.

Not spoken to my father since October over a set of spanners. To be honest with his increasing irrationality over small things I'm not sure I intend to speak to him for a long time. If I never contact him again I won't be too bothered.

Hearing stories like this make me so sad.

I lost my dad at 10 and my sister a few weeks ago, I would do anything, absolutely anything to have them back in my life.

Please sort these things out, before it's too late, life is just way too short.

On the one hand I appreciate the post above, as I lost both my parents at a relatively young age.

On the other, my eldest sister has driven me beyond my reason, and now I have children I'm not sure I want them exposed to her.

I don't really have anyone.

My mum died when I was 17. My dad got remarried 15 years ago and decided he preferred his new family and completely cut everyone off. He's probably dead now as he'd been in his late 70's and was in poor physical health.

I haven't spoken to my brother since 2002 due to his increasingly unreasonable and divisive behaviour and my sister emigrated to Canada in 2006, although I have been over several times and we speak on Facebook.

All of my grandparents died when I was quite young and I have 2 aunts and an uncle left as all the others died amy years ago.The last time I saw any of them and my cousins was in 2005 at the funeral of my uncle, when most of them completely blanked me, and those that did speak to me were very off.The reason for this was never explained to me.

When I think back it's pretty sad, but it's what it is I suppose?frown

Yet a couple of weeks ago you said you were planning a reconciliation in the near future because you are the main beneficiary of his will.

My 77 year old father stopped speaking to me in October when I called his pro-Brexit/ Blinkered Daily Mail view of the world 'lunatic'.

He's since missed my birthday & we got a Christmas card addressed solely to my wife.

My 3 sons are capable of thinking for themselves & believe he's acting like a petulant child; one thing's for sure, he has more to lose than me.

How odd to search through another posters past posts. Nevertheless my post doesn't negate a reconciliation - I may or may not. For the time being he can keep it, I make enough money for myself.

Lucky you.
Sadly for some of us, 'but they are family' and sharing some common DNA are not really valid excuses or some sort of get out of jail free card for repeated and continued totally unacceptable behaviour, and in many cases it is simply far easier to cut them out completely than the stress and aggro caused by continuing to putting up with it.

It's often not as simple as sorting things out though.....

I've not spoken to my mother since I was 14, I'm now 38. My wife and children have never and will never meet her - I won't have them exposed to her poison.

It is sad though, my wife's mother died fairly young and she'd do almost anything to have her back but some people, such as my mother, are just unpleasant and simply being related to me isn't enough to overlook this.

I'm certainly with you in respect of petty arguments though - life is indeed too short.

I guess every family is different.

I was quite surprised the other day when this topic cropped up at work. One of my employees is 29 and says he only speaks to his parents every few months. Not for any particular reason, he just says he hasn't really got anything to say to them and vice versa. I found it really quite shocking for some reason, but he feels it's perfectly normal.

I come one of those families where 'the family' is really important to us all. We spend time together, work on projects and business deals together, holidays and trips away together. Kind of like a very small and crap version of the Mafia biggrin

We do spend a lot of time together as a family. Me and my brother get on extremely well, and I also enjoy spending time with my parents as they do a lot of cool stuff and usually always invite us along as they enjoy our company. I enjoy their company as well.

I can't really imagine it not being like that.

But as I said at the start of my post, everyone is different and if you don't really enjoy the company of your family then why bother?

I don't speak to my dad anymore. Haven't since this time in 2010. Other than my sisters wedding in 2012 I think.

My step dad is my dad. He's raised me for the last 25 years or so (poor sod!).

Close to the rest, and as much as my siblings piss me off, couldn't not talk to them (I've got to have the last word ha).

I will never speak to my sister's family ever again, after a simple thing led to a big dispute.
Their behaviour led me to call the police.
Threats made that involved my child, mean i wouldn't lift a hand if their lives depended on it.

And i live next door to tnem. Happy families.

I thought nothing could happen like that to our family.
But it only takes one bad apple to mess things up.

Do i care? Not at all.
They crossed a line and mean mothing to me now.

Meh !

It`s no great shakes. They could be anyone, they just happen to be blood.

Haven`t spoken to my brother in years, but not really worried, or indeed even think much about it.

Dad's dead. Mother brings me badly down with her 'don't even have a glass, never mind a half-full one' attitude. Yes, she's 84 but there is barely a speck of stoicism in her approach despite the fact she has a very comfortable living environment and the money to pay for it. She read the Daily Wail all her life. That's her brain now.

I feel very very sad but I cannot do it any more. To me that is toxic.

Brother (foghorn-leghorn) thinks I'm a dick as a result. Suits him to do so for his various reasons. Whatever!

This whole bloody saga has caused more arguments than anything else. I know of several friends who have had blazing rows with family over it.

I know several of my family voted for it and I am not happy at all with them over it. I just avoid that conversation as I know it won't end well.

I think I have managed to stop my Dad getting the mail though, so in time his views at least should mellow.

I am currently traveling so meet a few people who speak to their family very little. It is a bit disheartening that people can cut their children or their parents out of their lives. One example was a trans woman whose Dad said she was dead to him. How the fk can someone say that to their own child?
