I'm in a pool league and a rather large guy in my team really whiffs, he must be able to smell it.

How do you tactfully tell someone that they stink of s**t and that they really need to wipe properly?

He's a nice guy, don't really want to hurt his feelings or cause resentment, but we really can't put up with it.

I had a mate like this many years ago.

Me and another mate took him aside and just told him straight. He was actually surprised but took it well. It did help him understand a lack of girlfriends smile

He basically never bathed enough so changed that overnight.

Two a day for me, without fail. I hate going out having not had a shower. Unfortunately, the problem with smelly people is they become oblivious to the stench they kick out.

One of the girls at my old work was telling me once about how 'gross' it was putting her partners boxers in the wash as they always had 'skid marks' in them.

I then told her that there was absolutely no reason whatsoever for a mans pants to have any form of 'skid mark' in them, unless the man in question was under 5 years old or suffering some form of diarrhoea type illness.

She was fairly horrified as she just assumed it was a normal man thing. I believe she went home that night and told him that he was some sort of filthy unhygienic animal because everyone at work said so smile

Had to go for an X ray the other day, a rather large (ball on legs) woman with a most impressive gunt and jolly Christmas jumper cam in and the smell that came with her was "gamey", smelt of sweat, chips fages and unwashed lady garden, thing is, she looked pretty well turned out but smelt disgusting.

I'd just say 'look, you stink, get a wash'.

One of my best mates is a top lad, but his personal hygiene used to be dreadful. He had issues his with his wife at home and sometimes he'd come to work without brushing his teeth or showering. I told him "have a fking shower, man, and wash your kit". He responded with remarkable candour and did so, which was better for everyone.

He even bought a strange peroxide mouthwash!

He's the best player on the team!

Seriously though, I have to have a word in his ear, but what to say? how?

He has issues with personal hygiene, you are inept with interaction. Winning at pool is the least of your worries.

Not true. We've all (well I have) had certain times in our lives where we might do a lot of physical activity on a hot day and smell by the end of it. If i smell, I know it.

In the past I've said to others. "I'm apologise if I'm a bit stinky today" but please tell me! most don't bother bringing it up.

Slight off topic.

Whenever I meet someone with stinky breath who doesn't appear to know or care. I then get incredibly paranoid about my own breath and that maybe I'm nose blind to it eek

I've told people they smell before, but they were different, I need to be delicate about this one because of his general demeanour, I think he may not take it well unless the message is delivered in a precise and sensitive manner.

What choice of words would you select Mr socially proficient clever cloggs?

Also, I'm happy to play pool with you any time for money smile

I said that to a flatmate of mine many moons ago. He acted all hurt and told me he had a "BO problem" like it was some kind of sensitive medical issue. In reality it was the same BO problem we all suffer to varying degrees, but manage to treat effectively with a daily treatment of soap'n'fkinwater. He thought he could not wash for a week and then shower while using chemical lice treatment as some kind of turbo super wash. Weird guy.

Stick a can of deodorant in his queue bag with a note on saying ' you stink pal, sort your st out.

He will never know who did it and he will probably just keep it quiet and think more carefully about personal hygiene.

We used to have a Nigerian guy on my old ship, who wreaked, stunk of old, stale B.O. Gross. Nobody would tell him though, scared of him pulling the race card I reckon.

Luckily I worked in a different section, never had to deal with him.

I saw him a few years later working in the company office in Norway, smelt of roses, so someone one had finally had a quiet word in his ear.

OP, your pool playing mate isn't called Andy is he?

We've got a guy at work that smells of ste and has been told before by the boss to go and have a shower because he's affecting other people. Luckily he works in the call centre so I don't have to experience his aroma.

Get a conversation on the go where a few of you discuss hygiene habits - a little like we are now.

Once he realises everyone else won't go a day without a shower, he might learn something...?
