Christmas Family Game Recommendations
Discussion
What board games or similar can you recommend others to keep the family entertained at Christmas? Having grown up with a few and then moved away from them for a few years, I am happy to now be back in the "games" frame of mind over Christmas with the family and can recommend some but also see if anyone else knows any.
Classic Monopoly, Scrabble will be forever popular I am sure.
Yesterday, I played Cluedo for the first time in about 20 years at a friends' party, and I remembered that even when I was 10/11 it was quite easy and not that exciting for adults.
I am partial to Absolute Balderdash, a board-game version of "Call My Bluff" I suppose, where everyone has to guess the meaning of obscure words, or who notable people are, but also make up versions themselves for people to guess.
I also enjoyed Articulate, the wife and I completely annihilated the rest of my family on Christmas Day last year.
A new one I discovered yesterday, at the same party as Cluedo, was Last Word - and this is good for loudmouth types such as myself. A race against a random timer to see who can come up with an answer on a topic before the buzzer goes off. However my wife didn't like this game even though she was very good at it (nearly as good as me, and way better than our mates) and so doesn't want to play it again. I have already ordered it and will wrap it up as a gift for my parents I think.

2 others from the stable of modern card games are Apples to Apples and Exploding Kittens (don't bother with the purile NSFW version). Both great fun, and exploding kittens gives you a chance to be really nasty

Played 'Consequences' last night. All adults mind, which makes for some pretty lewd stuff. V simple. Get paper and pens for each player.
Each player write downs each line (as shown below) and passes his paper to the player to his/her left.
His name
Her name
Where they met
He wore
she wore
He said to her
she said to him
And the consquence was......
Enjoy!

Exploding Kittens is very good.
I bought this a few months ago, not tried playing it myself yet but my OH & kids can't work out how to play it!We were playing Cards against Humanity with friends on saturday night, great fun if you're all broad minded!
If your family are addicted to thier smart phones try "Heads Up" or "Charades" https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/charades!-free/id6...
It is old fashioned charedes but using a phone to generate the questions and to cause the player to occasionally look a bit of a dick.

UNO
simple to explain and play, then people start getting devious and taking sides. i've seen couples argue over this!
2017 update to the thread if there isn't another going already.simple to explain and play, then people start getting devious and taking sides. i've seen couples argue over this!
My sister brought a new variant of Uno along this year, from the same company, but it is called Phase 10. A bit more grown up than Uno, and a bit more tactical, just as easy to play... worth adding to your collection if you like Uno for sure.
