My brother is in his early 40's. He has just brought a motor bike and taken up riding. Despite never before being interested in it. The joke in the family is that he is experiencing a mid life crisis and a divorce will come next (Although this would not be funny). I have been reading about signs of a male mid life crisis and it seems that buying a motorbike is one of them. Thoughts please. Especially from other bikers?
Who has experienced one and what did you do?

I've just decided that I need to re-energise my creative side and asked the wife for an electric guitar for Christmas (I'm 42 next month)

It's going to be long road biggrin

Bought a motorbike. One of the best things I've ever done. Hadn't ridden at all until I was 40.

I sometimes wonder if I'm having a mid life crisis but it is hard to tell frankly.

I suspect it just started really early (at about 15 years old) and has never stopped since then!

I've always wondered how it's possible to spot a petrolhead's mid-life crisis:

"Oh, so you've gone out and bought a sports car? Are you going through a mid-life crisis?"

"I've bought 15 sports cars since I got my first one at 21. No, this is just my mid-life. The only crisis I have in my life is that I couldn't keep the other 14 sports cars."

I think when I hit my mid-life crisis it'll be evidenced by me taking up cycling or horse-riding, or something like that.

I would assume a lot of what is called "mid-life crisis" is more related to the financial ability to fulfill lifelong aspirations?

I was fortunate to be able to buy relatively expensive sports cars in my late 20s and even then I was alternately accused with either being a "boy racer" or having early-onset mid-life crisis depending on the relative age of the person talking to me.

Many will buy a motorbike as they finally have the space and time to use it, there is no "crisis" involved.

Had trials and motorcross bikes from age 7 to my late-teens. Put me off ever wanting to ride one on a road!

I bought my first convertible, first Italian car, aged late 40s and then covered it in stickers.

It's not a mid life crisis,I'm just bonkers.

A mid life crisis seems to be about kids leaving the house and having more time/money. Or just realising that sitting about the house and 'doing things for the good of relationship' has got a bit boring.

I'm not old enough to have gone through one, but I already ride bikes (of both kinds) so it will be interesting to see what people will use to accuse me of when using the 'mid life crisis' line.

I guess there are plenty of people who have an obvious mid-life crisis. I used to work with a guy who was late 30s when I met him in 2010.

He would go through phases of wanting things then going off them. In the time I knew him it was the expensive bicycle, little sports car etc. That struck me as a bit mid-life crisis as he'd never shown interest in those things previously.

On the other hand, for many I think it comes a time when people are perhaps a bit better off. I mean I got to 33 and went from hot hatches to being in a position to run a high power German tank so bought a CLS63. I suspect when I hit 40, no one would be surprised if I owned another car.

maybe, like me it was a case of having 3 kids between 25 and 29 and being skint and the first time you get the chance to buy yourself something instead of nappies, food, bills, child care, holidays, clothes and all the other crap is when you are 40 ish ?

I bought a bright red 944 convertible which fits the profile but I wasnt having any crises, it came up for sale so I bought it.
