I do have a 'unicorn' if that counts but I stand by the idea of being with that person is a whole lot greater than the experience and that's the reason I've never done anything about it when presented with the opportunity over the passed 20 odd years (known since we were 12)
We are still good friends and we meet up every now and then etc...

I'm very happily married but until I met my now wife, there had definitely been a couple I considered had "got away" through whatever circumstances - Bad timing when one or other of us was in a relationship and the other single, and one time when I was a little more shy than I am now, not having the courage of my convictions to go through with making the right moves.
Who knows what would have happened if I had made the right moves then, where would I be now? But I don't wonder too much about it, given that I am now happy and wouldn't want anything to change now.

Lucky here, too - got 'the one' I wanted. Mrs.T66 may be as batty as Bracken Cave, but it's been a great 24 years so far.
i met a lass and for three years she was always the one i wanted, I even dumped a serious girlfriend to get a chance with her.
all the time we were friends and I was getting signals that there could be more but she or I were always in a relationship and she was playing it cool.
towards the end of the three years I just went for it as we'd been talking a lot more than usual, going for drinks etc and she'd spent the previous few weeks trashing her boyfriend whenever we met. There was plenty of flirting, occasional holding hands, goodnight (platonic) kisses etc
she turned me down "i have a boyfriend"... i completely binned her at that point finally realising she was just after the attention.
a few weeks later we met at a party and she started asking my advice on how to get off with my mate as she'd finally dumped her bloke. I utterly blanked her and walked away.
I was devastated for about an hour until another girl i knew rocked up at the party. 20 years later we're still together. best decision ever.

Yeah there's always at least 1. But that's the randomness of life's relationships... it all depends where you live, where you work but most importantly, your relationship status when you meet said 'one that got away' and her relationship status at the time. So many variables.
Through the joy of facebook though you can often see what they ended up doing, who they ended up marrying and think WTF, I had a lucky escape!

Yeah I love a good Facebook stalk. Especially when the ex has got really ugly and fat plus the other half they have now is not the sort of person they pictured themselves with. I have had quite vain girlfriends who always wanted a good looking partner. Now they have seemed to settle for second best. Either that or they can't get anyone else. I have had quite a few lucky escapes.........considering what some have turned out like.Through the joy of facebook though you can often see what they ended up doing, who they ended up marrying and think WTF, I had a lucky escape!

There was somebody who, at the time, I thought was the one that got away. We'd only just started up, and she then decided to see her junior assitant at work instead.Fast forward a year or so to the wedding of the person who introduced us, and the ex had put on some serious weight. And I took great pleasure in pointing it out. Her bf was also ultra-sensitive to the 2 of us talking. So I made sure I did plenty of that!
I'm now long since happily married, but I have a related problem of having met a complete and utter soul mate. Fortunately she lives many hours away on an aeroplane and in a visa-restricted country! That's that then.
Only one really, I dumped her as my mate wanted me to go to a party she didn't want me to go to.
My bad, really.
Looked her up 15 years later and took her to a track day she had expressed an interest in, apologised for my juvenile behavior.
She and I had had interesting lives which we might not have had if we had stayed together. Still good friends.

A friend suddenly turned into four month thing at the end of sixth form. She was petite, blonde, mad as a brush and never happier than when she was dancing. We split up for various stupid reasons which seemed important when you were 18. (mainly to do with where she lived.)
Saw her again last year at a reunion after 32 years. She hadn't changed, still blonde, still petite, still bonkers and didn't stop dancing all night. We laughed and joked like it was two weeks since we had last seen each other. Her hubby came to pick her up and with a kiss and a smile, she was gone again.
They have been others, of course. But its Christmas, I'm single, old, they're releasing a sequel to Bladerunner and I still can't work out where it went wrong all those bloody years ago.
