Well this is my first sober christmas in 20 years!
Find it quite refreshing at the moment, nice waking up without a hangover.

We have both sets of family coming for lunch, plus sister in law, her husband and 2 little nieces.
That could well lead me to temptation....

No, I'm not a recovering alcoholic but after several years of trying Mrs Magpie is due a junior magpie on the 1st of January so I'm on alcohol lockdown!

Just praying it doesn't happen today!

Merry Christmas everybody and have a few drinks for me beer

i just drink in moderation now, and feel better for it. i think drinking is to be enjoyed so not give up totally. things like drinking less alcoholic drinks and smaller sizes and basically keep away from pubs.

Think this is the 2nd Xmas I've woken up without a hangover since I was about 18.

Cooking for twelve today..... I suspect I won't be waking up feeling so fresh on Boxing Day

Been dry for two months now, having sworn to the daughter I'd not drink a drop ever again, after my last appalling performance....

It is surprising how boring most social events are when you are totally sober. It's hard work trying to be part of the happy, joyful throng when everybody else is slurring gibberish they won't remember in the morning, and you are trying to talk sense.

I find life very bland and nondescript when hit head on with a sober mind.

This hits the nail on the head. I find them immensely stressful too unless I'm just out with a small group of friends.

Me too. I'm a horrendous misanthrope though, so the lack of alcohol is likely just incidental.

Congrats to the OP. On the plus side, if your OH does decide to pop this afternoon the roads will be nice and quiet. biggrin

I guess I am really, I just don't like people, period. Some are okay, I can have a chat with friends, get up to date on current affairs.... then it it time to move on.

Maybe that is why I'm so fond of the demon drink, it makes me normal?

I feel the same.
It helps me loosen up in a social environment.

The missus is really outgoing and talks to anybody/everybody.
I sometimes feel I'm stuck for something to talk about.

Having said that, the last 2 weeks of being sober at parties has forced my hand somewhat to be a bit more confident.

With me it turns out I have social anxiety to some degree which the alcohol simply masked.

The more my OH drinks the less appealing it becomes to the point where I drink very little these days.

Had the traditional glass of whiskey last night, OH sank a bottle of Prosecco & 1/3 bottle of Baileys.

Being sober in the company of inebriated people is rarely fun in my experience but I have little interest in joining in.

This for me too.

I can't drink due to the medication I have to take. Has pretty much ruined my social life. Small groups I can cope with, larger groups and I feel like a 3rd wheel and end up leaving early.

I will be on them for life so there will be no change.frown

I've battled with drink all my life, even gave up for 16 years once, but started again when we moved over to the Philippines in 2010. Not always bad, but every now and again it gets out of control. Better to 'simply' stay away completely.......

Yes. Being sober when everyone is pished is rubbish.

Being too drunk is also rubbish.

We have people over just about every Xmas eve and y'day I was dreading it thinking I'll wake up today with the usual Xmas day hangover.
Having had only two small beers by dodging booze and serving everyone else I've managed to avoid it, today may be a different story however .

KingHerald, I blew every brownie point I'd ever earned last year on Boxing Day by getting so hammered I didn't eat a thing and went missing for two hours only to return covered in mud !
My kids were also not impressed,

So what did you get up to?

18 hour drinking session down the Go-go bar street, Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon.... followed by some sort of panic attack at the idea of going home to the nazi power trip dictator wife, followed by mucho stupidity and embarrassing performances I can't even bring myself to repeat here.... frown

Totally agree, and given the strength of Red horse or Tanduay it is easy to get hammered in the RP for a few quid. I learnt my lesson a few years ago while staggering drunk down Del Pilar, I managed to get bitten by a street dog. I ended up going back into the LA Cafe which was luckily open 24h, got a clean bar towel around my hand and washed the wound out, got into a taxi and went home.

Mrs T went ape (she's a nurse so you can imagine her reaction), took me to the hospital for a tetanus and other stuff plus the additional lecture that I might have cought rabies. Spending Xmas with a very sore hand, an even more unhappy wife and screaming kids, plus the associated madness of Xmas day in the Philippines tought me a lesson.

Since then my alcohol consumption consists of absolutely zero if I'm driving (which I volunteer to do for that reason - keeps me away from booze) and maybe a few beers when we're on holiday.

If I feel the need for a drinking session, I always remember a quote I saw on Reddit from a young recovered alcoholic:

"I now never regret having stayed sober the night before".
