Well, I have been here for just over 6 years and have read many many threads. Even 5 years ago, there was a group of, let's say, 'forumites' that entered every thread to see if they can score virtual points or maybe make themselves feel more socially adept. Most of the time it didn't work and they were 'shot down' or made to realise the error of their ways. Unfortunately, these forumites have appeared to become the majority instead of the minority.

Basically, almost every thread that contains even a modicum of opposite view points has, in general, become a flame fest or point scoring game.

The lack of decent conversation appears to have been totally lost.

There are many times when I read a thread that I wish to put forward my point of view, but am reticent to do so as it would be lost amongst the diatribe of personal insults made with little input as to the original point being made.

I honestly don't expect this thread to fare any better.

I remember when the questions were asked what trousers to wear, what colour of socks matched, what cars are best etc. and these were plentiful and the answers were derisive, but made mostly in jest. Sadly these are now in the minority.

Yes, it's late, yes, I have been partaking of a whisky or 3 but the point remains.

RIP Pistonheads as it was.

Long live the king.

Agreed, i often think about just being done with this place but keep going for strange sentimental resons.

Ive managed to get someone on pistonheads a job, ive asked for help with my HNC, ive been offered support when things went to st.

But agree nowadays it seems too big and no longer a site about TVR's, whether you will win a Lotus and helping like minded folk.

this place has never changed really, maybe move right wing, but still the same old just more people.

i don't go in the news bit much, it is a cesspool and the place would be better off without it.

I'm genuinely surprised you think this to be honest, but do agree that the further away from the main pages you are the better it can get.

But saying that im a regular in the Watch section and i know we have a bad rep in their just not overly sure why, yes we get a bit precious but there often people there willing to help others.

I remember reading a thread like this in 2002.

DELETED: Comment made by a member who's account has been deleted.
Plus one.

There is a mine of useful advice on here, for me photography, computer, DIY, work, geographical region, my own car, as well as interesting snippets such as TV and Radio and Science.

The NPand E forum is basically people arguing out opinions with the occasional piece of knowledge. I read it and occasionally contribute but ignore the posts that are too strident or just name calling or repetitive.

Personally I think PH is a fantastic resource and also source of entertainment..... maybe I need to get out more! smile

The George Micheal thread in NPE is a perfect example of this.

Normal people wanting to talk about it, remember his music, what it meant to them.

Punctuated by aholes trying to decry those people for doing so for no apparent reason.

It's very odd behaviour. I wonder whether these people are a bit socially inept and maybe bullied in real life, and this is their chance to 'have a go' from behind the safety of their keyboards.

In the George Michael thread they were politely but firmly slapped down, which is what we need more of I feel. Otherwise 'they' will win and the decent posters just won't bother any more.

Silvagod,

I am loaded with sprouts and beer.

Just tell me who you want to get rid of and I'll fart in their general direction. smile

We do need to maintain certain standards on this forum. wink

On the positive side there are still threads where people help each other out. smile

I've frequently thought that the standards have been slowly going down since I joined, so it's probably my fault. Sorry! smile

I think different viewpoints are a good thing, it would be very boring if we all looked at things the same way. I think people should be allowed to challenge the viewpoints of others, as long as it is done in a way that keeps the personalities of the posters involved out of it.

I've noticed it too. My other forum experience was mainly guitar boards which all died sometime around 2005-10. I now don't play guitar and can no longer afford nice cars, but only hang around from emotional investment in the good times I've had here.

NP&E is like a youtube comments forum these days but I think, like many things, that's just what happens when you become a victim of your own success. Enthusiast forums full of enthusiasts draw attention and then get dragged down into generalist ones.
