I turn 30 next summer and have a strange compulsion to throw myself out of a plane before then. Lord knows why as I have a fear of heights. Are there any PH'ers who have done a skydive in England? If so, any recommendations? I live in Leeds but I'm happy to travel. A colleague suggested going abroad for it, seems it's cheaper in Spain but I imagine the safety standards are somewhat different.

It's all down to weather to be honest, you could be sat waiting for the wind to drop for the whole day. I did a tandom drop in Florida years ago and could see the shuttle, langar is my local drop zone, can get busy in summer

My old man jumps mainly at Langer in Nottinghamshire. It's a great venue with very experienced people. http://www.skydivelangar.co.uk/

My dad started jumping in his 40's, he is now mid 70's and just set a new world record over in the USA with a 130 way formation of people between 40 and 80 years old. It's a bit of an addictive sport for some people. biggrin

I've done a few jumps, you can either do a static line jump or a tandem to get started. Tandem will give you the free fall sensation where as static line allows you to control the decent under canopy, either are good fun.

I did one in 1996 for cancer research at Topcliffe MOD airfield, went with a friend which helped as it is a long day with all the prep involved. There was about fifteen of us on the day,i opted to jump first and my friend ended up going last so we had lunch in the local pub,he stayed on the cokes haha.It is a fantastic experience and one i remember for numerous reasons, one being that the main chute didn't deploy on my jump, will never forget the instructor flapping for the reserve as we plummeted towards the ground ,very sobering to say the least. We had the paras going up with us as well which was great to see how professional they are up close.I don't know if you can jump from Topcliffe now with it being twenty years ago,i wouldn't do it again as for me it is just too involved,if you do it,when the pilot cuts the engines at drop time the plane lurches and seems to fall which you will know about.

Did a charity jump a few years ago at Dunkiswell airfield near Honiton in Devon, had a great day there. Though we were doing it for charity I thought the prices were pretty reasonable, and there are often offers on deals websites such as groupon etc. Would love to have another go oneday.

Thanks for the info folks. Langar looks ideal for what I'm after and the prices seem alright too.

Hibaldstow is worth a look, they've the Dornier G92, which is roomy and quick to the top. You'll get 15,000 feet too

or... sack off the tandem and do ground school and level 1 of AFF (Accelerated free fall). Then if you love it you can do the other levels and get your qualification and keep jumping, if not, you've still jumped out of a plane at a similar cost

Edit: Langar is good also, I've still got some jump tickets from there. It's an old WW2 airbase so lots of history

I did an 'indoor skydive' on Tuesday. You only get 2 minutes, but it give a real taste of the real thing. I managed to get 3 mins and some serious 'flying' as my daughter chickened out, so her time was given to me biggrin

Although I have no experience of UK, or indoor experience (despite living 3 miles from the one in MK), and then 15 miles from the other indoor one based near Bedford.

Why not make a proper experience of it. Me & Misses went to Dubai for her 40th, thought I'd give myself a little present whilst there.

Was truly amazing and unforgettable. I'm not sure I would have thought the same in a cold windy, cloudy UK airfield somewhere...

I've done three - this is a pic from my first one. Wow the feeling when you leave the plane - unbelievable! I did it with Skydive Jersey (over Guernsey!) so we have to go quite far out to sea to come in on the wind. A little bit disconcerting.

I've done the indoor skydiving experience at Bedford - was OK, but was only for a couple of minutes.

Yeah that's a good shout.

I have a Langar ticket from 1997, £14. Not sure why it was unused, probably weather.

I watched my brother jump here for charity: http://www.skydiving.co.uk/

Was all very efficient and organised and you can get film and pictures, you'd never catch me dead jumping from a perfectly good plane though.

Did your brother pay for his jump out of his own pocket and give all of the money he collected for the jump to charity? Or, did he use some of the charity money to pay for the jump and just donated what vwas left over?

"Please sponsor me to jump out of a plane to help people with cancer"

Translation:

"Please pay for me to have a right old laugh jumping out of a plane. I can't afford to do it on my own, but under the banner of 'Charidee' I can do it at no cost to me. The people who run the event will make a good few quid and almost five quid will go to cancer research."

Just to satify the rabid dogs, from his JustGiving page "I am self funding the dive, so all of your donation will go to the charity."

Happy now? Can we get back to the topic at hand?
