I was driving through Bradford last night, which is risky enough judging by the state of the mostly lawless streets, when I encountered a road block at the bottom of Leeds road.

It appears some locals were a little upset that a man had been shot near Halifax the day before. They must have decided that this warranted holding up a main road by "peaceful protest", and they felt so strong about their cause that they were wearing balaclavas and waving sticks about. All quite intimidating.

The police did eventually arrive, but instead of moving the "protest" and allow people to go about their business, they appeared to ignore them and proceeded to re direct the traffic down the side streets, further inconveniencing people.
I suspect the police didn't want to hurt their feelings by asking them to vacate the road

Why were a handful of disgruntled locals allowed to carry on like this, I doubt they have the full facts about the shooting.

Bradford, really is a bit of a toilet.

I didn't realise how bad it actually was until I had to drive through Bradford for a couple of months solid.

This place is horrendous and the traffic is like London traffic and some of the driving is just suicidal.

I was round there a lot around '98 to '01 and it was a sthole then, some parts of it I genuinely felt like an intruder.
Probably worse now?
Saying that my first contract near Gloucester I got the train down and cycled to the hotel, the route from the station out was, unbeknownst to me, down a section locally regarded as a bit ghettoish, it was the night after Mark Duggans shooting and there were masked groups bearing various sticky things, later someone torched a furniture warehouse or something and there was a bit of looting.
Through this passes mr naive, expecting a quaint Cotswold type place, setting a pace Lance Armstrong couldn't have matched with a kilo of pcp.

Our business is on the other side of Bradford so we drive through it on a daily basis and have done for years. The centre and its immediate surroundings are not nice but this repeated insistence that driving through it is like driving through Beruit and that the traffic and driving standards are like the Wild West is, in my long experience, complete noncense. Yes on the rare occasion you get an idiot driving like an idiot but no more than anywhere else.

I lived there all my life until 5 years ago. Now every time I go back it seems to have got a bit worse.

There are areas that are practically lawless. Where the driving is suicidal. Try driving down Barkerend Road in BD3.

That said there are some parts that are just as nice as anywhere. And places in other cities that are as bad or worse.

I live in central London and I've been to Bradford. I can assure you that your local tards are worse drivers than our local tards.

Maybe I just keep visiting during a handicap convention? Would explain why I keep going. biggrin

Bradford centre has transformed a bit and I had a good night out at the Sunbridge Wells just before Xmas. I was struck but how much the very centre had changed in the last 5 years.

That said, the rest is a dump until you get to Saltaire/Baildon on the North side.

If you go to 'Spotted Bradford' on FB you'll see some footage from the other night and other assorted delights.

Our route to work is either between Thorpe Edge and Ravenscliffe then along Sticker Lane past the top of Barkerend or up from Rodley then straight past Holme Wood or along Canal Road then up Wakefield Road.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the centre of Bradford and its immediate surrounding areas, it should be razed to the ground. Far too high a percentage of the population of that area are bottom feeders.

The housing estates and the inner city areas are generally awful. As I suspect they are in any other huge city. get 2-3 miles out of the city centre and its beautiful. I'm sure many of you watched the docu-drama thingy about the Bronte's, shown over Christmas. That was filmed in Bradford and of course their home is in Bradford.

However, sadly Bradford is a racially divided city, like many others I suspect: with "white flight" in evidence. I'd say its become more lawless, but maybe the country is full stop.

Stay out of the city centre and the BD1, BD2, BD5, BD7 postcodes and its generally very nice.

Why some tracksuited yobs need to demonstrate about an armed drug dealer being shot dead, who knows: but there you go. Is it any different to the riots in London, seemingly started over the death of Mark Duggan- another armed drug dealer who needed to meet his maker ?

Unfortunately for anyone visiting Bradford, its first introduction is from the M606 motorway and the roads into the city and its area/residents are simply the worst examples of society you could wish to meet.

Haworth might have a BD postcode, but it is most certainly not in Bradford.

Skipton and Settle are BD23 and BD24 respectively, but would anyone say they were Bradford?

Quite. Ilkley has an LS29 postcode, but is Bradford council. Postcodes are often misleading smile

Clapham and Austwick have LA postcodes, but they are not in enemy territory!

Where abouts in BD9? Most of it isn't a place you'd holiday in!

Working on Bingley Road, will need to go up Sunday night and hotel it for two nights. Anywhere close that is palatable recommended, that is expenses friendly to stay?

I think the same of London, I grew up there and everytime I go back to visit relatives it seems to get worse (and it wasn't great back in the day).

By Bradford I did mean the centre and immediate out laying areas. I totally agree that once away from the inner toilet bowl there is some lovely areas, Haworth in particular.

My comment was more as to why the demo and why nothing was done to clear the road. Why the locals were left to wave offensive weapons around whilst wearing balaclavas.

The Midland Hotel is probably your best bet.
