My wife is pretty Superstitious, it drive me mad, Christmas decorations that were not down before some arbitrary date have to stay up, including the ones on the tree at the front of the house, so I took them down today without saying anything.

I cant believe how an otherwise intelligent person believes this bks.

Magpies how no influence on your life other than being noisy winged Chavs, you do not need to salute them.

Mirrors if they break, well, that is bad luck, as you have a broken mirror to clean up, but that is the extent on the influence.

Not walking under ladders, that is not a bad one as you may get a pot of paint, decorator or fireman on your head, other than that, makes no difference.

You cant "Tempt Providence", unless perhaps you go to Rhode Island and offer free Doughnuts, saying "I havent had a puncture in ages", does not mean you will now have a puncture ffs.

Touching Wood doesnt do anything apart from you might get a splinter.

Anyone else had enough of this bks or even believe it ?

Superstition / Religion has no place in modern society. It's amazing how supposedly sensible adults will tie themselves in knots over this madness.

I haven't had to rely on superstitions yet, touch wood.

But that's more of a private moment.

I'm with you, drives me nuts. A friend's Mum had a superstition about it being bad luck to pick up keys yourself, if you drop them.

She was about to go to work one day, but dropped her keys before locking the door. She took the day off work...

Thats hilarious.

My mum is very superstitious, when I lived at home I could never cross her on the stairs as it was 'unlucky'

There was a study done, not made public, for the obvious reason that the results showed that anyone who didn't believe superstitions died. FACT.

I saw another study a while ago stating that those who did believe superstitions died too. It's a grim prospect, but cross fingers we'll survive.

Crossing on the stairs is a good one, I always point out that you do it all the time in a city centre mall, store, office block but they don't count it's the stairs in your house.

Cleaning the house on New Year's Day or good Friday is not allowed as you wash someone out of the family I kid you not, but you've had a shower, you've washed the pots, again you can do these but not the house. Lol

My mum has one where she insists visitors have to leave through the door they entered, so if you come in through the back door you can't go out through the front. My dad looks at her like she's a crackpot!

I also remember her freaking out when I broke a mirror as a kid, she went ballistic. Rest of the time she's perfectly normal.

Where does this one come from? My wife has this superstition and it drives her nuts when I walk straight over them - not that I do it deliberately of course... whistle

It’s bks isn’t it; not walking under a ladder for example is a common sense act due to the potential of falling objects.

Putting new shoes on the table is another, never stopped me nor bothered me.
Black cats crossing your path is only unlucky for the cat if it miss times the road crossing and gets a new name “BANG, thump-thump”. Black cats must be hellish unlucky for the owners…

Whilst I was drag racing (retired to concentrate on flying) my kit bag had an envelope in it with a letter in case I was killed/mortally wounded, I didn’t class it as tempting fate or otherwise it was a letter with instructions mostly - no will at the time.

I don’t get it at all.
