An interesting article on billionaire preppers in the New Yorker here.

Is it a case of the more you have the more you fear you will lose it, or just a fashion thing now? I know it has been discussed (and usually dismissed) on here a few times but not in this context. It seems there is a whole industry catering for paranoia. The article states it is a cheap hedge against an unlikely outcome. New Zealand seems the place to go. Does the fact these Silicon Valley CEOs are playing the game now give it more credibility or is it still just tinfoil-hattery?

I'm not sceptical but let's suppose they make a relatively small investment in a business that specialises in this sort of thing, a few high profile people get in on the act, more follow and the small investment turns into a healthy profit as the masses follow the high profile well known person....

Long stretch of an idea I know but that's all I've got other than they're just mental.

It just highlights that no amount of money can overcome the deep seated emotional instability and fear of the American people. It's a white man mental illness born from how their ancestors arrived there.

Well I wish all those super rich people in their luxury apartments luck when civilisation has collapsed and all the armed guards realise that their skills are a lot more useful and thier apartments aren't as nice biggrin

Exactly. He's got a nice, paid job and if the worst happens he gets a free, luxury condo and a couple of days after moving in he'll get a free delivery of supplies and staff.

I have "72Hour Grab Bags" in each car, and a 24hr one the exit route from the house.

Only cost a few quid, but it never hurts to be prepared.

The ones in the car are mainly for keeping you sorted on a long wait while waiting for the Breakdown services, or if you end up stuck on a motorway in the snow for 2 days like has happened before.

The one in the house, is just to get us through the first hour or so if the house burned down, so its mostly a change of clothes for everyone, disposable phone loaded up with all the family contact details, foil blankets and loose change.

Could have just wked himself out with all the Trump celebrations? Or maybe just busy filling enough magazines for the ethnic cleansing event they've all been waiting for?

What stuns me is the arrogance shown.

These people KNOW that the policies and establishments that made them super-rich are the same ones fuelling a lot of the (growing) civil unrest, yet they're choosing NOT to try and soften those policies, but instead to look for a back-door escape route.

...which, aside from being very selfish decision making, is also ridiculously sub-optimal - yes a softening on those policies would cost them more than "prepping", but equally if things do go fully-FUBAR, they've just lost 90+% of their fortune...whereas if they chose to return some equality they'd pretty much eliminate the risk.

Whoever posted above about paranoia is bang-on - these guys are card-carrying sociopaths who have an empathic horizon of about 10 yards...

Here's a link to that location on Google Maps. Note the armoured vehicles at the bottom left of the complex.

Aren't 'grab bags' slightly larger than usual packets of crisps?

Don't the Tackleberrys of the world call that which you refer to 'go bags'?

Fixed that for you 😉. You wouldn't just go to a neighbours house if yours burnt down? Or a hotel?

Grab bags are one thing and if you live in remote parts probably handy to have. But anything more is just for nutters.

You're right.. i couldent leave home without my foil hats!! what the hell was i thinking!!!?!?!

But the house grab bag, means i dont have to think about finding my wallet, getting dressed, finding my phone, getting the kids dressed ... dead.

I just grab everyone and leave.. snatching the bag on the way out. everything is in the bag, phone, money, clothes, shoes ( plimsoles ) etc.

Once fire brigade is called with the disposable phone, I then call family/taxi to come get us.
Its intent is to get us through that first hour when no one is thinking straight... im not going to escape my burning house and immediately turn into bear grylls! hehe

everything in the house is covered by insurance. that's what its for. im not risking my own or my families life to save something that will be replaced new for old anyway smile

That's not prepping. That's just being a sensible bloke aiming to protect his family against statistically likely events.

If you want to be a prepper then you need to have a hole in the ground and a clear plan on how to start killing everyone and enough arms and amunitiin to do so. I bet you haven't even signed up to any right wing, end of the world publications!!

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the photo. So you have surrounded yourself with armed (probably ex military) guards who no longer have any use for money, and you don't really have any transferable skills. Good luck with that.

And if the fire is between you and the go bag? I think you need at least six, all in different places, to mitigate against this eventuality.

Or you could just realise that, if the house burns down and you're lucky enough to escape with the children, there's a civilised world out there which will take care of you, perhaps even a police officer would be kind enough to ring your Mum and lend you a blanket? Just worry about the people in the house, adding other things to your list when the house is burning down is completely unnecessary and may in fact cost you valuable seconds in escaping.
