What is the low down on these? They seem to be popping up all over the place. There are two next to the train line near Leeds station and one has appeared on the main road near my home in a former Office furniture wharehouse.

Wonder if it might be a cult charity scam thing.

I very much doubt it is to do with charity door step bags. Perhaps they are churches which meet in warehouses?

Warehouse churches are exactly that.

As a 'new' church, why invest capital you don't have buying a traditional church or renting from one when you can just rent cheap warehouse space for the amount of people that are meeting.

Source; Sister was a member of one in Chichester until she moved away.

(Of course, it's entirely possible that there may be examples where it's less churchey and more culty. Or depending on your view of religion, they're all cults anyway!)

There's one that I know of in Horsham.

From what I can tell, it is a little bit more of the evangelical happy clappy type, but they are probably using a rented space far more cheaply than building their own church.

Doesn't appear anything like a cult, a couple of friends I know go along from what I've seen of their posts on Facebook. Usual facilities, and they do plenty of charity work as well.

What I noticed last time I drove past, is how the next unit along is now owned by some kind of sports car dealership...

It is one of the curiosities of Christianity in Britain that while the established and mainstream churches are becoming smaller and smaller (due largely to the decline of habitual/nominal church attendance, rightly in my view), active christianity (as in a genuine belief) is almost certainly increasing (albeit from a low number).

Two explanations for this I think.

Firstly it is the huge rise in immigration from African countries. Take a drive round South London on a Sunday morning and you will see what I mean.

Secondly, church planting (which I am presuming where this warehouse church came from). A decent explanation is here - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_planting

It's worth noting that the one Church of England diocese (London) which has really embraced church planting has seen numerical growth over the last 35 years.

Very true.

I would say that, at this early stage at least, there no indications from those who I know to attend, to be stocking up on Kool-Aid.

If I see that happening, I might buy loads of kool aid from the states, and sell it on to them...

There's a huge one on an industrial estate in Watford. 2/3 large units.

The congregation is made up of young 18-30 year olds. It's massively busy whenever I've driven past.

GF's parents manage a community centre and there are a few of these that rent the space on a Sunday, both very competitive with each other (fragments of the Adventists).

Generally there is a preacher who presides over a congregation, somebody is then bought up to the front, words are said and the "patient" starts convulsing - quite annoying the GF's dad says as he's the premises manager and they keep on scuffing up the floor.

There may be an element of cultism to it though - they've left bits behind at the end of meetings, the standard collection plate is now an envelope which they must tick various projects to give money toward on the outside, also members are required to standing order a proportion (documents said 30%!) of their salary to the church.....no wonder why the pastor drives around in a succession of new Merc's.....

Its in SE London so make out the congregation's origin as you will.

How depressing. One would hope each successive generation would be brighter than their parents.

Soul Survivor is basically Reading Festival for young Christians. I'm glad to say I moved away from the indoctrination my parents gave me, but it probably took until I was in my 20's to shake it off.

Audacious church Manchester - Popped up minutes from city centre.

18-30 seems to be main demographic there. A weirdo from school is always posting about it on facebook.

Way to smiley and happy the people that go, although I did see they have a few good looking girls in attendance. Could be one for the Match.com thread biggrin
