Somewhat strange occurrence yesterday evening.

Someone knocks on my front door. Now I never answer my front door as anyone I would want to talk to knows to use the back door. So I ignore it.

A minute later someone knocks on the back door.

There is a late teenage lad stood there that I have never seen before. I open the door had he asks for directions to Market Harborough, which is about three miles away. Somewhat surprised as ask him if he has seriously knocked on my door to ask directions? He says yes and apologises claiming they don't have a sat nav in the car.

I ask which way they came into the village. I direct them back out that way onto the main A road and tell them it's signposted from there. He thanks me and leaves.

I look through a window and see him get into the passenger seat of a car, and it leaves. Loud exhaust and all. At the end of the road he turns the opposite direction that he would need to to exit the village the way he came in.

Hmmmmm.

So, could I have been burgled if I wasn't here?

if a burglar has to knock the door to see if someone is in, they can't be that good. if he was a teenager then seems fair, probably no credit on phone for data.

This.

Something similar happened to me when I lived in the Cotswolds. A week later I got burgled. Time for security lights and CCTV if you haven't already. That often puts them off.

ETA... keep a record of the make/meodel/colour of his car! Tell people in your village to keep an eye out for it.

It's time to lay some booby traps - marbles on the floor, staple gun attached to the door knob, that sort of thing!

I think I'd certainly be sufficiently concerned to make notes of all I can remember, and be on my guard more than usual.

Maybe no sat-nav but I don't believe a teenager with a car, or his passenger, doesn't have a smart phone!

We had a similar thing here yesterday - was on our 'plot' about 500 yards from home strimming and a couple of herberts go past in a chavved up 53 plate Tyre R - I could hear it coming & though WTF is that doing round here ? anyway Missus Zippy said later on that it had pulled up the driveway of Zippy Towers and she happened to be in the hall & opened the front door - one of them got out and asked if we were "Nigel' and had a Discovery for sale. There is no one called Nigel round here and I would know if a Disco was for sale (19 houses) plus they both had smartphones so how can they get lost ? reckon they were casing the joint.

Unfortunately, I'd agree with the general consensus. Security lighting is the easiest deterrent for most burglars.

Time for a quick read of the Tony Martin guide to home security.

If you have the car details, call your local cop shop and let them know - that could be very handy info for them.

I had some scrote collecting for charidee a few weeks ago. Called police and sent them details - his face came up nicely on the CCTV. If I get unexpected callers, I try to rile them a bit to gauge a reaction - this guy in particular was quite rude (didn't like me asking about the charidee) and then I mentioned the BiB which he definitely did not like.

No 'normal' person asking for directions would go and knock on the back door having already got no answer from the front door.

Herberts up to no good is my conclusion.
