Good morning,

Sadly my grandad recently passed away, we were very close and I'm keen to do this for sentimental value, rather than financial.

My grandad has a fantastic condition, proper waxed Barbour coat that I've inherented, it's been looked after very well, re-waxed and cared for for years.

However it's too big in the body and to short on the sleeves.

Apart from Barbour themsellves (who wont touch the body of the coat)

Anyone know any companies that will tailor this item for me?

Struggling to find anyone at the moment

Thanks

Kieran

The jacket abviously meant something special to your grandfather. I think I would buy the same new coat in your size in remembrance of him.

Perhaps attach something to your coat, hand stitched name inside the coat perhaps.

Aren't they supposed to be big, so that one wear one's tweed jacket underneath ?

I am looking into this as an avenue, and am popping around to see a local dressmaker/alterations lady this week,

But unlike most items, like a suit, or fabric coat, the waxed finish and tough material seems to be the sticking point, a few companies I have spoken too were fine with the alterations until I mention its a waxed Barbour

Unless there's significant excess material (and lining) I am struggling to think how one could lengthen the sleeves.

A sailmaker would have the necessary thread and machines, not sure about their tailoring skills though.

Surprised Barbour won't do the body of the coat...they do pretty much everything else. Where you say it's too big...where exactly? Assuming it's an old school Border or similar they are a really loose fit. Try getting the warm pile liner for it, that really makes quite a difference to the fit in the body. They will also raise the hem and bind the cuffs too which should make a difference.

There's a guy near me who I've used before and he's got a very good reputation. He's based near Ludlow I think (south Shropshire). I've got his card at home, can't think of his name. I'll get you the details if you're interested

ETA: He told me that the biggest complaint is the body being too large and sleeves too short. I had one that was right size for the body and he's put about 3 or 4 inches in the sleeves

Ill give them a call and ask, its just not listed as an option on their website and on searching the web for barbour tailering I found a few people saying that Barbour wouldnt tailor the body fit, only sleves

That would be fab, I'd much rather use someone that knows how to work with the product, thank you smile

Bloody hell, someone has a good memory. Anyway, I am pleased to report that the smell soon subsided, and the jacket gets used pretty much daily in the colder months. Got lots of alterations and a rewax by Barbour last year and it looks great.
