You know the kind. The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Star etc etc.

Why do people read these?
Something that baffles me as surely everyone knows by now they just churn out lies and hatred. Always a load of bks and yet people keep buying them!
Sun doesn't even do PG3 anymore so I can't even say people buy it for that.

Clueless.

Spend a bit of time in the NPE forum, you'll soon encounter their readers.

reading age. well accordingly to my former teachers (going back decades) it's because the average reading age ability in the UK is about 7 years old.

I think Facebook clarifies this nicely to bring the theory up to date.

In fact I've googled it:

Search Results
The average reading age of the UK population is 9 years – that is, they have achieved the reading ability normally expected of a 9 year old. The Guardian has a reading age of 14 and the Sun has a reading age of 8.

There you go, people are idiots.

In the mail, I quite like the articles about people with real hassles/problems as it makes me feel better about my st!

I know its fashionable to knock the Daily Mail but they are a traditional British paper even if some of there story lines are sensationalist and "disgusted from Tunbridge Wells!).

All newspapers will probably be gone within a few years anyway.

They are perfectly aimed at their target audience. They reaffirm their readers thoughts and beliefs and let them feel safe and amongst friends. Most people don't want different or challenging views presented to them.

I usually just put it down to the sweet, comforting embrace of confirmation bias. And tits.

I wish I was one of them, as the stuff that bothers me in life wouldn't even register with them- they're more chilled out about everything generally!!

I suppose one has to be among the more stupid (or American) to use the word 'stupider' ?

Same goes for the likes of the Guardian - surprised this one didn't make the thread title to be honest !

But, I agree, not sure why they still bother.

I think it should be understood that when media organisations mention the word "News", what they actually mean is "Opinion".
So BBC's "News at 10", should be "Opinion at 10" ... etc.
Same for the tabloid rags, the title should just be "Daily opinion"

When this stark point is realized then I do wonder why people would choose to buy them rather than look at their news/opinion feeds on their phone or laptop (for free - in most cases).
[facebook is now said to be one of the main providers of news/opinion - and not to forget good old pistonheads !]
