Boring Club Constitution questions
Discussion
Here's a real thread to set PH on fire..... not!!
I'm club secretary of a small football club at Step 6 in non-league football. This year, at the AGM, I intend to go for the role of chairman as well as I believe I have the drive and energy to succeed as well as the admin acumen needed for the secretary's role. I have looked at the club's constitution and there seems to be no bar on the same person holding both roles and there aren't answers to my two questions either.
The club's constitution says that all nominations for officers should be sent to the secretary seven days before the AGM. So....
1. As secretary, do I send a letter/email of "self-nomination" to myself seven days before the AGM in order to fulfil the required protocol?
2. Given that the current chairman intends to stand down (but might change his mind), does he have to send a letter/email to nominate himself for the role ahead of the AGM?
There, told you it was riveting!!

With regard to your nomination I would suggest following the process written down, albeit you are actually nominating yourself to yourself. However, if there are ever any issues with you holding both positions in the future you may need to show you have followed the required protocol to be appointed by club members to the additional role as Chairman.
The current Chairman should also have to follow protocol with regard to relinquishing their position. Your club should have rules in place with regard to when resignations need to be received ahead of the AGM so new officers can be proposed and added to the agenda for voting and/or appointment. If any sitting officer feels they have come to the end of their usefulness in their current role they should give the club the best lead time to fill that role and get suitable candidates to be proposed.
You can't really run a club of any sort if the incumbent officers can resign the day of the AGM (unless they are a prat and feel like getting back at the club for some reason or other) as this gives the committee no time to put out feelers to get the right people to volunteer for the role(s) open to be filled.

Whilst it doesn't help in the short term, Sport England has a template on it's website that guides on setting up a constitution that may be worth reviewing to close any gaps in yours.
O/T slightly but good on you for standing for this and the time you already put in. If I have guessed the club correctly from some of you previous posts (initials OA?) then my older son played for your club for a couple of years and both sons have a lot of mates with you. My two are at the 'Green Army' just up the road (again assuming I have guessed correctly, if not that will mean absolutely nothing so feel free to ignore it
