I'm off to Florida in a couple of weeks - all ready to go, except as I rarely go on holiday to hot/beach locations, I'm not sure what to wear on my feet!

Will do a fair amount of walking, probably without socks on.

Had a look in Next yesterday at flip flops and sandals, all were crap to be honest, felt cheap rubbish.

Do I need something like sandals from an outdoorsy type place?

What does everyone else do?

Most of the time when I have been to Florida in the summer I've just worn trainers and those trainer socks... and by trainers and socks I mean lightweight stuff with lots of vent holes. Your feet don't get that uncomfortable in terms of heat. Certainly if you're walking all day you'll be better of in something like that over a pair of haviannas (especially if you haven't worn flip flops for longer periods before).

The main thing for me really is sunburn. Even with sun cream on my feet seem to catch the sun far too easily and burnt feet are no fun.

Flip flops are good for trotting down to the pool or the beach. Though even in summer I'd wear something a bit more substantial for going on the sand, I remember being in Naples (FL) and the sand was so hot you couldn't walk barefoot on it.

I always wear Velskoen - South African bush boots - when out and about in hot climates... Search "Bush boots" on Amazon will get you something comfortable and durable.

Just wear comfortable trainers and trainer socks. I made the mistake the first time and wore havainias and it was not fun. If you go to the parks your realise that everyone has trainers on for a reason.

And not normal socks, but knee length ones.

mesh trainers (loads of them about from all the brands)

trainer socks

comfortable and you can wash the socks rather than your shoes stinking

or just flip flops depending on the days activities.

I live in Orlando and totally recommend these - Keen Newport H2 - best of all worlds, comfortable, durable, OK in water, keep your feet cool, ventilated - everything.

Just be a little careful and apply sun protection - burned feet will spoil your vacation.

I have a pair of Nike Roshe that I wear for the gym, they have a thin sock like material on the toebox so you can feel fresh air coming through. They were great on holiday last year.

Flip flops, got some in SF last time I was there, much better choice available in the US (compared to my local shops anyway) as they are geared up for wearing them all year round.

I wear these

They have the added bonus of a bottle opener in the sole

I wore "flip flops" for the first time when I was 29 and they were extremely uncomfortable. I persisted and I bought Reef Fanning and found them to be as comfortable as a trainer. I have done 2 separate weeks in disney with out any issues. But, as others have said, lube up! My feet burn quicker than any other part of my body so apply the sunscreen.

Never understood the idea of having a bottle opener on the sole of your show.

Why would you want to open a bottle on something that's walked through god knows what and is covered in germs and dirt?

Just wear flip flops?

I just wear my 'havaianas' and shorts. Did 10 miles in them on Wednesday down in the south of france, no problem,

Obviously if you aren't walking on the pavement and going to be hammering some trails I would get some mesh trainers, the nikes suggested above are good. I find people look stupid wearing full on sports/crossfit trainers to stroll around in the sun. Each to their own i guess...
I always scoffed at those who wore havaianas as their design and construction looked identical to any other flip flops (which I always found hugely uncomfortable). Last year I finally succumbed to a pair and now they are the first thing packed. Utterly unbelievable how they can appear exactly the same as all the others and yet supremely comfortable for weeks on end. I even wore a pair back for the 24 hours from Sri Lanka to the UK via dubai a few weeks ago and despite km of walking around airports etc arrived home with less foot pain than I would have done with my feet expanding in flight in a pair of canvas trainers or similar. Remarkable things.

Sounds like a job for the birkenstock to me. Just buy them a bit before as they take a while to bed in.

I have a couple of pairs of the Reef Fannings, best flip flops I've ever had. I wear them pretty much all summer and in that time there will many BBQs and bottles that need opening, but I have never used the bottle opener on the bottom. I think it was the original version of the Fannings that came with a flask in the heel, so you could drink out of something that goes on the dirty floor.
