Looking into holiday options for this year. Found a nice looking hotel with a pool in France, but the website is quite clear that only speedos are allowed, no swim shorts.

Is it ever acceptable for grown men to wear such things? I'm not exacrlt built like the guy in the Southern Comfort ads but I'm still a bit uncomfortable with the idea of wearing them...

Really? Not allowed board shorts?

I'd be looking elsewhere if they have that kind of outdated rule. Probably no women in the bar after 6pm as well?

Why? Do the French particularly like looking at each other's dong-bulges?

Just another unforeseen result of our Brexit vote?

It's supposedly a hygiene rule - if it's an item of clothing which could be worn on the streets to get to the pool, then it's not allowed in the pool.

Strange, but it's just one of those odd cultural quirks.

When i was on holiday in sharm I think I was the only bloke in shorts. All the Russians were wearing trunks. The women were in even less which i don't remember complaing about.

Not so much common as almost blanket in French pools.

And if you don't have any, they'll rent you a pair. A mate of mine didn't notice that his rent-a-speedos had a bloody great big ladder up the chuff, either.

(And the rest of us certainly weren't going to tell him...)

Many pools have vending machines of budgies, too.

Had this last year in France. I just wore my running shorts with the legs tucked up.

If you are swimming, as in get in, swim lengths, get out, nothing better, but for hanging round a pool on holiday, nope, and really only very trim blokes can get away with them, and I prefer to say Buzzard Smuggling....

In my illegal giant chicken factory (and these chickens are scared because the don't know why they're so big, and they're going, "Oh why am I so massive?" and they're looking down at all the little chickens and they think they're in an aeroplane because all the other chickens are so small)

this is quite common on the continent - many swimming pools insist on Speedos instead of shorts
it's just the way it is

speedos to wear in the water, shorts to wear next to the pools - not a big deal, is it?
you don't have to parade around with your tiny todger "on view". wink

Should be fine with a pair of these, baggies are for people who can't swim...

we went to france for 2 weeks last year- the pool was strictly no shorts/board shorts, bermudas, cloth etc.

so budgie smugglers only OR tight boxer short cut/style trunks.

Not a single bloke wearing anything else was allowed in- lifeguards/staff strictly patrolling. Was funny watching folk being refused and trying to argue otherwise.

make sure you buy them here- I realised my mistake- bought them immediately from the complex shop- the only and last pair. they never had anymore stock in and try as I might, I couldn't find a single pair for sale at any shops, supermarkets etc anywhere locally for sale. Plus I had my car- so we were travelling quite a bit too. Bit weird I couldn't find any for sale.

it was quite evident for another 2 weeks, lots of blokes simply couldn't go for a swim- no trunks with them, or none on sale.

but my word they were tight and I looked mental.

It explains why Flavio Briatore wonders around like this then.
