When my son was born I bought a nice bottle of Port from the year of his birth which hopefully he should enjoy later on in life, I plan to give it to him on either his 18th or 21st birthday.

This year we were fortunate enough to have a daughter born to us also and now I'm trying to think of something in a similar vain, ideally from the year of her birth also, that I can get for her.

Price is to be less than £100 but really it's more the thought than the price, I'm sure there will be plenty of other things she wants nearer the time!

What if he hates port, people do, I do.

I have a box for my son, news papers from the day he was born, a gold sovereign coin for that year (bought by granddad, some of the cards, first hat, a baby grow, toy ect.

I have a little one due later this year and like yourself wanted to get some things from his year of birth. As BR has said above, coins are a good shout. I went a bit beyond a normal in circulation coin and went via the mint bullion website and got one of the 1oz Silver Britannia coins. Only £21 but a bit different. I'll probably end up buying one every year for the next 18 years so he has a nice set.
It's a little harder buying presents for girls, maybe a Hermes Birkin as per the other thread.... I think maybe a keepsake box similar to BR's idea is best, with some photos of you and your wife, some coins from this year, drawings by your son of what he thinks his sister will look like etc. I believe girls prefer emotional stuff like that to a Lego Technics GT3.
Edit for poor grammar.

Sell it.

My Uncle was given three bottles when he was born. I think he drank one when he was 21, sold one at a similar age to buy a boat, and drank the other when he was 40.

Thanks all, I like the time capsule idea, we have the newspapers from her birthday and she'll get a set of coins on her first birthday from the Royal Mint from my parents so that works towards that I was just looking for something to top it up.

Like the idea on the round pound too, will try and get a 2017 one to hang on to or at least a 2016.

Think the Hermes Birkin may be a touch out of my price range!

As for not liking Port as someone suggested that's a win for me smile

Hard coinage is a good idea as I strongly suspect that there will be no currency at all by the time she is 18 or 21. Nor mobile phones. Only some mad caps actually using steering wheels, gear sticks to change gear, foot brakes etc by way of getting around in a car! Can't see the point of a framed '45 from the year of her birth (as mentioned above) since vinyl records are not really the 'currency' of the day in music terms. I know, I know, there is a bit of a revival but it doesn't reflect the 2010's does it.

Maybe a document that described the latest technology for today. What memory a powerful computer has; what mobile phones are capable of; etc Make it a real time document.
