I got into a debate yesterday evening with someone that had picked up some ( obvious to me, house keys) keys and decided to keep them 'safe' and post on the local facebook page that she had them. I suggested that the hapless person that lost them would be searching high and low to find the house keys...and obviously wouldn't, because some unhelpful person had decided that they would keep them safe instead.
What would you do if you saw a bunch of keys on the pavement?

Hand them in to local police station and leave a note maybe (if obvious which house they belong to)?

Hand them in at the local police station like a normal person. Curiously missing from the vote.

If I happened to be directly outside a shop then I'd possibly take them in there and hand them in.

Having said that, I've seen plenty of people do the Facebook thing locally and successfully reunite the owner so it's not the most stupid idea, just need a way to avoid visits from the nutters who claim the keys belong to them.

Owner rings up.

You: So these are your keys?
Owner: Yes
You: Well obviously I am going to need some proof that they are yours. Can you confirm your address to me please?
Owner: provides address
You: Thank you but they are not your keys.
Owner: but, but...

Some time later owner's car is stolen.

When there are two keys found in the wild, loosely connected to each other with some sort of metal (st)ring,

better don´t pick them up, it might be a trap.

Only if they are caravan keys.

If they are house keys you will be fine.

Many times it gets shared on Facebook around here, usually with "I Found this set of keys with this identifiable keyring, in this specific location, and they are at the police station/lost and found box at Tesco/Contact me on here if you want them back/give me £5,000,000 or you'll never see your house again"

Police station. Isn't that an obvious thing to do?

Interesting comments - I wouldn't have chosen the police station but it seems to be a popular choice. Reason why I wouldn't is I live in a village and that would mean a trip into town. The keys in question, after the facebook post, were then handed in later at the police station.
I would have left the keys where they were as even putting them in obvious eyeline sight might have been missed as the searcher would be looking down at the road/pavement.
