Sold an item of clothing on eBay - brand new with labels, never even tried on.
Buyer received it and complained that it's too small for them. They said "I should have asked about the size before ordering".

The size is in the title of the auction, in the description and there's a close-up photo of the label showing the size. I'm not a business, I was just selling a few unneeded things.

It's a ladies top and I'm worried in case it comes back smelling of deodorant and with orange make-up stains. It'll make it harder to sell.

If I refuse the return and they leave negative feedback, what are my chances of getting eBay to delete it?

If you refuse the return/refund Ebay will automatically refund them anyway probably!

This happened to me. Two important things:

1. What was the returns policy on your listing? It needs to be 'no returns' and;
2. if they do leave negative feedback, you can get eBay to remove it if they deem it to be unfair (which it is).

Returns policy was "no returns". Still don't trust eBay, though...

I trust eBay. I don't trust the people who use it.

No returns means nothing on ebay, and neither should it.

Otherwise why doesn't everyone sell, and just put 'no returns' on their description?

In the context of the buyer changing their mind or because it doesn't fit, it's valid. If the item was defective or not as described then yeah, no return policy doesn't apply.

'No returns' doesn't mean anything on ebay, in my experience. I sold an expensive camera lens on there, in perfect condition. Seller received it ok and sent me an email saying there were very happy with it. Two weeks later another email, basically saying they didn't like it, and made up some excuse about it not working properly on their camera. I initially refused their return request, they escalated it through ebay/paypal resolution service, who sided with the buyer and allowed them to return it for a full refund. Luckily it came back, was still fully working and wasn't switched. I just lost out on the ebay fees and the postage costs.

Maybe this has changed now, but with clothing, all the buyer has to do is claim it's counterfeit, and ebay instantly refunds them and (instructs them to destroy it).

Selling privately is also completely different than selling as a business.
