A long story short; I need to change my kid's name; just move the middle and first name around.

Does anybody know the process and how long would it take?

Thanks

Have you got agreement from everyone with parental responsibility? If so It's pretty easy and painless.

If not, it's more messy and you'll need a court order.

Calling the kid Colin Ulysses Norman Thebullettrain has an unfortunate combination of initials.

You can call yourself pudding brain McFart Face if you like there's nothing illegal in it as long as it isn't used for illegal purposes. If someone's name is Stuart James Jones on their birth certificate there's nothing wrong with them being known as James and no need to change a thing.

There was a girl on Pointless this week named .....Holly Jade Jasmine Gillingham Football Club,......surname.

Oddest thing was she's also Welsh.

She did win the jackpot with her sister ,who seemed to have a sensible name....silly

Changed my surname twice, once on getting remarried and again on getting redivorced. Went double barreled but couldn't afford the hyphen.

AFAIK, given names can be anything, deed poll unnecessary. This is why the twollops who saddle their kid with a football team's surnames need a DP

An old boss of mine was known as Peter but his legal first name was James and Peter was his middle name.

He just always used the 'referred to' name as his middle name rather than change it

I changed my family name about 8 years ago - standard set of words, photocopied about 10 sets, signed them with two witnesses. Job done - banks, DVLA, Passport Office all entirety happy. From memory, some bodies like HMRC didn't even need to see a document. I would imagine that changing child's name just as easy - doc written in third person rather than first?

Fourth name I've had - early ones due to adoption screw ups. Gave myself a middle name as well, whilst I was at it.

As above, I don't think you have to go too far into legalities. Just start using the new first name.

When I was 17/18 and fed up of hearing my then-surname pronunced incorrectly (it was German and only 4 letters long) I decided to change it to the English equivalent. I told the bank, National Insurance, the 6th Form and sent off a copy of my passport and birth certificate to get a passport reissued in the new spelling.

Things might be different now to the how they were then in the early 90s but it only took about a month before there was virtually no trace of the previous surname in use. I was surprised – and still am – at how easy it was. I didn't use Deed Poll or any legal avenues. I'm still not convinced it's 100% legit but so far it hasn't come back to bite me.

Good luck.

If you want to formally change it round then you need both parent's consent and change it by deed poll, I changed my surname by deed poll about 13 years ago and it cost around £30. Just went to the local solicitor's and they produced all the paperwork.
