Last night I bought a Xbox live Gold membership, using PayPal.

This morning I get an email informing me my Microsoft tax invoice is ready. It looks exactly like the mail informing me I purchased Xbox Gold, same format etc.

I'm worried about opening it, just in case of the obvious, but is it genuine? 'Invoice' makes me think I have to pay something....

IIRC that's just the way Microsoft do things. You can always just download and virus scan the file to be sure.

If you're worried about the email (but want a copy of the invoice), log in to your Microsoft account and view / download it from there.

This one is/was genuine - obvs can't vouch for yours, but so long as you have decent protection in place should be fine to check it out.

I get one similar to the post above mine when I buy something from Xbox live - same again, can't vouch for yours, but they do send them out after you've made a purchase or renewed a subscription.

Okay, sounds kosher then. I don't need to see it, just wandered if it was a scam/virus that had somehow found out I had bought something from Microsoft and was, er, trying to scam me.

I will assume the 'invoice' doesn't mean they are asking me to pay something else.

Its the equivalent of the piece of paper you get in the box with your Amazon order

I send invoices out for stuff already paid (on the rare occasion clients are on the button) just to keep the paper work sorted

So basically a receipt, I guess then? Okay, no worries, no need to change all my passwords etc

Why would MS be so stupid to create something that looks exactly like a scam virus email? They're idiots.

Exactly. In the last week I have had several very similar mails from the tax office, and a couple from people I used to work with. A each with a clicky link to the information the mail pertains to.
