Obviously the films ham things up, but is the basic premise of a super spy authorised to eliminate baddies true?

Interesting!

From wiki "The Act also gives the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs the power to grant immunity from British prosecution to SIS personnel when they engage in any acts while on operations abroad that would be illegal under British law, such as murder."

A single person doing the things JB does, in the way he does? Of course not.

His personality and approach is the opposite of what the intelligence community are looking for. They are looking for an intelligent descrete "grey man".

There are a variety of different roles in the intelligence services, and very few of them have much in common with JB.

I am fairly sure my father in law was James Bond.

He worked for MOD in the navy, ostensibly as a quality control inspector. Except he had a chauffeur and was incredibly physically fit. Something not what it appeared to be there.

In my mind, yes. There's a whole section of them consisting of a small group of trained assassins leaping from runaway trains and plummeting aeroplanes before thwarting the baddies just to keep the British end up.

It's basically the job Ian Fleming would have liked to have had if it ever existed.

Not sure about the UK, but other countries definitely. Israeli secret service, Mossad, has a few of them, who travel the globe eliminating enemies of the state.

Then you had the Bulgarians, who back in the day took out Georgi Markhov with a poisoned umbrella on Waterloo Bridge. More recently, the Russians got that dissident in London with the Polonium. The North Koreans killed that bloke at the airport earlier this year.

I'm guessing that as Anjam Choudhery and his ilk are still walking around, we don't.

The UK will activate a Task Force to take someone out, not the boys from Legoland. The first known was Task Force Black, later Task Force Knight. The UK TFs have now merged with US ones and its a much bigger thing. No doubt there is still something along the lines of 10-20 man teams for special stuff. Spys are not killers they are silent manipulators, data gatherers and work normal jobs, play sports, go to the social events etc when in country. Getting "shown out" is a massive no-no but JB seemed to get away with it mission after mission!

Poncing round in a limo with a walther simply does not happen. Working on a farm in the back of beyond growing crops does...

Strip away the glamour and you have a paid assassin, working on the whim of a public sector department. That would not be allowed.
