I'm quite fortunate to meet a diverse range of folks in my day to day business but there is a certain group of people I know I am destined never to get along with. It's those people who start a conversation with a stranger "what team do you support?".

Am I footballist?

Don't think I've ever met someone who has used that as an opening question, even on the very rare occasion I attend a football match through work and meet strangers who have also been invited.

Where do you find all of these people?

I lived in a house share a few years ago with five blokes on meeting them for the first time the opening line was who do you support.

Get it all the time in the oil industry. It seems to be a way of categorising people (for the footballists).
I generally derail the conversation by answering 'Yamaha'.

Turns out not many of them are also into motorbikes.

Indeed, never met someone who says that either.

Yep. Standard practice. Although if you've already asked the slightly more subtle "what school did you go to?" then no need to ask about football. smile

I know someone who won't employ the other side.

I actually think it's getting worse around here in the West of Scotland, not better.

20 years ago it seemed to be dying out but now it's more polarised than I can remember at any time since the 1970s.

I always chuckle and say something along the lines of 'oh no, there aren't any wheels in football'.

Unfortunately, that's when they start trying to engage me in talk of F1 and I have to explain I prefer to watch cars hurtling through forests.

Invariably they then come to the conclusion that this is going nowhere and move on! :-p

I was on a training course and the instructor asked me who I supported. Went something like:

Him: "What team do you support?"
Me: "Don't watch football"
Him: "Sorry - didn't realise you were gay!" (Chorus of laugher from course mates)
Me: "I'm not the one who watches young blokes getting sweaty for 90 minutes."
