Went to a Rod Stewart concert last light. Before hand we were in a local pub which was understandably rammed.

A few customers at the bar seemed invisible to the bar staff and waited ages to be served - however on multiple occasions, the person next to them who had been behind in the queue but was approached first, gave up their spot to say "actually they were here before me" - indicating the person who had been waiting ages (I did this twice myself).

What do people think - is this good bar etiquette - or should it be every man/women for himself (a philosophy which some other customers seemed to be following).

Treat people as you would like to be treated.

It's polite behavior. So yes good etiquette.

If a bar is busy & bar staff can't always see who has been waiting longest I would always tell the barstaff who was next.

If I get served before someone who know was there before me, I allow them to be served first. As is fair. And then enough times, I get the same treatment in return

It's one of those unwritten rules that works pretty well nearly all of the time, and when it doesn't, it isn't really worth losing any sleep about it.

As a person who seems to be permanently invisible to bar staff I much appreciate the note-wavers at the bar who point out that I've been waiting.

If I get served before others i will say this guy / gal was before me. Sometimes its frustrating as people just flash a note and think the colour of their £ is better than your card! Or when "Regulars" get the special "Usual bill" when they walk in the door yet your stood there waiting to be served still.

What you have done there is 'been kind' - please don't feel the need to question kindness! This world is getting depressing enough already!

If this happens where I am noticed first and I wasn't in the queue first I will let the bar staff know. The reverse also happens, which is nice.

What is not nice is when somebody deliberately barges in, and then orders a huuuuge round, generally with a pint of Guinness at the end! Everybody knows you order Guinness first!!

I always get served first at Rod Stewart gigs, I guess I've just got one of those Faces.

The correct answer as always is - don't be a dick.

Seems I am in step with many others. The note thing dates back to before cards payment for a round was the norm. Showed you were ready and not one of those order 7 drinks (Guiness last) types who then realised the had to find their wallet or purse and fk about for 10 minutes doing that and paying.

OP, your behaviour is spot on, and is simply good manners. What we should probably now refer to as "sadly-becoming-increasingly-uncommon-courtesy".

I'm not questioning it - merely observing that whilst many displayed such kindness - a few did not.

Out of an admittedly small sample - I found that those that did not seemed to be predominantly women.

I do this if someones obviously been waiting longer than me. I do find it really annoying though when the barman then goes on to serve someone else after I gave up my position instead of coming back to me! Even though you are generally stood next to the person they have to bring the drinks are change back to it still seems to happen way too often.

Manners cost nothing ....

One of my bug bears is people who accept being served next - and know they are not next.

Good bar staff know whom is next/will ask rather than just serve the tw@t waving a £20

Yep - I worked in a bar for two years and would make every effort to clock who came to the bar and in what order - so that people didn't get left waiting unnecessarily.

I am often overlooked at bars (must just have one of those invisible faces) so I know how frustrating it is.

I'm quite tall. 6ft4 and once I was stood at a bar behind a short woman.

The barman looked directly over her head to serve me, I did chuckle hehe
