So chaps, I want to secure my future and marry the considerably better half.

Now then rings.

The missus does not wear jewellery at all, not even a watch. Where do I start? I can't exactly get down on one knee and ask her to marry me with a beer. Although she'd laugh and say yes. biggrin

Neither of us are bothered about getting married apart from the practical benefits.

What to do? Type the question in to google and H Samuel, and co are telling me a months salary and a big shiny rock silly

Try posting in the watch section, quite a bit of diamond discussion there occasionally. PHer ecain63 is well spoken of and always an interesting and knowledgeable read - he may well make you something superb for your budget. Anything you buy away from the High Street big names would be better value for money. Diamonds are a world of knowledge and cost!

if neither of you are bothered about being married not sure that I would be forcing the issue.

If it is because you want to show love and committment think of another way that means more to her.

Ring - Depends whether you want to do the full down on one knee thing. You dont have to. Many average sized girls are somewhere around L-N'ish, but a shop might be able to advise on resizing and / or exchanges

Cost - completely up to you, dont be pulled into the 'you must pay this much' equally as bad is the 'I saved 9994343% by buying a ticket to South Africa and going straight to the mine'

Just do whatever you feel is right, and good luck

I wouldn't spend more than £999 on an Engagement ring.
In reality I think I'll end up spending around £200.

Fair point. Anything more than a grand and I start getting sweaty.

If she's a keeper, then she won't be fussed on how much the ring cost or how big the rock is, just spend what you can reasonably afford.

if she has no rings to compare size, just try and size up her ring finger with one of your own, should give you a comparison, or at least a vague idea.

This.

My wife is delighted with her engagement ring. Service so good, we also returned for our wedding rings.

Is your issue also one of the design/style? Classic (i.e. brilliant cut on a plain band) is safest but might not be in keeping with your OH's personal taste.

One option is to buy a cheapo ring for the proposal and then choose the engagement ring proper together.

Ditto,

I proposed to my future wife last month, he really is fantastic and makes the whole process stress free.
You also garner huge brownie points with the future wife for having a ring made rather than bought if that makes sense biggrin

Nice idea

I think a cheapo one is going to be the way forward. If we could get a rusty mx5 on her finger it would be easy wink

I won't be spending a fortune She'd rather a turbo on the 5 than a couple grand ring. Another bonus is she thinks diamonds are a big con for stupid people. hehe

likewise my wife rarely wears jewellery so I proposed and she picked a dainty engagement ring and matching wedding band they worked out about 1600 quid. she doesn't wear the engagement ring day to day as she spends most of her spare time in the gym.socialising and weekends she puts them on so it was pointless spending big cash on them. we put more thought and expense into our honey moon

Nightmare again for me.

4 years ago he made her engagement ring (or his jewellers did)

A year later he did both of our wedding rings.

He's currently working on an eternity ring for her.

All much lower than the equivalent high street price, and it felt far more personal than going to Blue Nile.

Another vote here for Eddie (ecain63)

He supplied me with a diamond to propose with then we went to see him, chose a design she liked and he made it for us.

She got exactly what she wanted and I got the ring valued at twice what it actually cost.

Or,

Get the missus to pop her finger up your hoop. Then using a ring gauge stick it up your bum till it feels the same.

Why not ask her the question without a ring & if/assuming she says yes you can then broach the subject of what SHE wants to do about a ring?

Go & see Eddie also a PH member (J&R Jewelry).
I cannot fault his price, services or workmanship.
He has a thread in the 'watches' section of PH titled something like 'interesting job on the bench today'.
One very happy customer.
