Out in the back garden in the sunshine today... the ladies of the house in their bikinis topping up the tan....

And then a high pitched buzzing noise from overhead, and a large drone goes over. Circles back around, goes overhead again. Guess 100 ft over. Does another fly past. Stops. Moves away again.

Never seen or heard one around here before.

So, harmless toy or perverts choice tool for getting a look around the neighbourhood?

Someone will be along soon to post a link to the legislation about flying over peoples homes.

Hmmmm..... that's the problem with them you don't know whose watching you or why! Sounds like an uncomfortable situation you've experienced today.

This really. I hadn't given it any thought before, just thought they were basically a harmless toy for people with money to waste. But seeing one hovering around the house got me reaching for a shotgun that I don't even own....

As most drones don't have cameras i'd say you're worrying over nothing, even if it did have a camera you're still worrying over nothing. Granted you're in your private garden but whats the difference between that and someone looking at your better half in a bikini on a beach or at the local pool?

What? only the super cheapest smallest toys dont have cameras.

Anything of a reasonable size will certainly have one if not 2...

Well, if someone was at he local pool with camera and was clearly taking photos of the wife and daughter then I'd at least be able to have words.

It wasn't a small drone, I'd say it had 5 or 6 rotors and was substantial in size.

I'm not actually that bothered, but it did make me wonder if some local weirdo was checking out backgardens for people out sunbathing. We are lucky enough to have a totally private rear garden so yes someone taking a peek is a bit odd.

Only sold one about a year ago. Had a rat problem. Fixed that with it.

Make sure you get a decent ten-shot compressed air model.

I have numerous shotguns, but for taking down a drone directly over my land, an air rifle would definitely be the weapon of choice.

Trying to hit one with an air rifle is certainly more sporting to the drone operator than simply destroying it with a single shotgun cartridge, plus when combined with a silencer, a PCP rifle is almost silent.

was some lads flying one up and down the beach last year making very low slow passes over the people sunbathing. lifeguards didn't seem to care. Drones should be licenced IMO.

If you are out in public you should have no expectation of privacy.

If you are at home in your garden you should.

You can't stop anyone taking a sneaky look at your bird at the beach or the pool but if they were taking photos or filming her, would you be ok with that? What if someone flew a drone up to your bedroom window and snapped a few pics of your woman in the buff, maybe uploaded them to the net?

I don't think it's wrong to expect to be able to go into your garden without some pervert conducting aerial photography of you.

There must be a techie PH-er who can tell us how to jam or override the signals
that control a drone. Better yet, can it be made to home, like a pigeon, on its
own transmitter? At full chat? TeeHee.

The frequencies are well known so jamming isnt actually hard, but would itself be illigal and you would also be liable for the damage caused to and by the drone.

Often drones comms are pretty insecure so hijacking them is again not so hard but again probably questionably legal... wink

Pretty sure the normal rules of flying drones means you shouldnt be over private property without permission.

You may not fly a drone within 50 metres of a person, vessel, vehicle or structure not under the control of the pilot. You may not fly within 150 meters of a congested area. The drone must be within direct line of sight at all times. If the pilot is using a remote camera to control the drone, the rule still applies and he must have a spotter to watch the drone.
