I sound sooooo old saying this but can you explain it to me please? I see mention of it every so often in relation to news stories etc.
Essentially a VERY large collection of forums, relating to just about every subject you could think of, and quite a few you haven’t thought of! I pretty much learn something new every time I visit Reddit
It’s based around the premise of users sharing and discussing content. Also has a voting system, whereby the user has a single vote per thread, in order to upvote content that they deem worthy of such, or down vote for the opposite.
I agree with the poster above, in that the layout isn’t all that user-friendly, but nothing that a bit of familiarisation time doesn’t fix.

I am but predominantly for the gaming and football sub communities.
All the UK-centric ones are very politically motivated and leaning to a direction opposite that of the average PHer. In fact anything news or politics is very 'in your face left'.
A few other subs are pretty good too like tankporn and the history ones. I had a memorial scroll from WW1 in some inheritance and the nerds on reddit managed to find out roughly how the guy was related to me, when he died and where. Not quite 4chans 'weaponised autism' levels of geekyness but certainly a helpful bunch.
Casual UK is about the only tolerable UK based sub but it predominantly seems to be about ducks and Weatherspoons these days.

As for political bias, I’m not altogether convinced the bias is as bad as it’s being made out here. You only need to spend a small amount of time on the news subreddits to see that there is a lot of very lively discussion and opposite opinions and views being put forth.
In fact, I’ll often open a reddit thread related to a news event, read the comments on reddit, then later on, read similar comments on PH regarding the same event.

"weaponised autism"
Brilliant
Look it up, an individual on 4chan identified the location of an ISIS training camp from one of their videos, shared the info online and the Russians subsequently bombed it!Brilliant

They also found Shia LeBeouf within 24 hours from a picture of a flag on a pole that practically gave nothing away, using the sun, date and a few assumptions but that's not as interesting.
4chan has a lot of very smart people pretending to be very stupid.
