I'm looking for some advice here and hope someone can help.
MrsDWS has received two e-mails from e-bay and paypal advising that two shipments have been despatched to her. Both costing USD 75 and both from China. Neither of which she has ordered. Before anyone says "Yeah right!". I know she wouldn't have ordered an oil painting and two temperature sensors of some kind, they are not something that would/will be any use to us.

She only ever buys anything on Pay pall as a "Guest" and can count the number of purchases on one hand. It's not a thing we use.

She has spoken to the bank and cancelled the VISA card and tried to lodge an issue with both e-bay and pay pal but don't seem to be getting any response. The phone numbers that are given all seem to lead you around in circles! No human ever answers.

Also today we received a small package, again from china addressed to her at our home address together with our phone number on it. It contained six couloured beads! Bizarre! They are valued at USD 5 but this amount hasn't been taken off the VISA card. Again she hasn't ordered them.

Anyone any idea what is going on?

Thanks in advance.

It's likely scammers trying to see if their fraud will work hence the small package with beads. Similar thing happened to us and they went on to buy two large TV's and a large fridge from an on-line retailer using my paypay account, it was a right pain to get the stuff reversed with paypal and to this day the items are sitting up there as pending on my account and that's after a year. Needless to say I cancelled the card up on paypal and have nothing more to do with them.

Did these emails contain a link "to eBay/Paypal", by any chance? Did she click on it, and give her details to "confirm"?

If you haven't already then immediately change passwords on eBay, PayPal, amazon, cards, bank accounts etc to very strong ones. Check that PayPal and eBay etc only have one delivery address set up - yours.

I had something similar with a credit card being used by someone to have stuff delivered to their house. I got their name and address and reported it to the card company's fraud dept. They couldn't care less, yet same dept endlessly block my own purchases embarrassingly due to their anti fraud algorithms. Yet report genuine fraud/theft and no interest whatsoever.

This. I think we can be pretty certain the original emails were not from eBay/Paypal. Especially as your wife doesn't even have an eBay account!!!

Scam !
Ebay and PayPal could do a hell of a lot more to make their services safer but that would cost money .

No matter how much they spend, the end result will always be the same - the user is the weakpoint.
