Slightly odd question - got to travel by train tomorrow and likely return to a different but nearby station, depending on what time I can get away.

2 Singles are £44 total, 1 return is £34. However, a single to either final destination is the same price (using mostly the same trains) and they are in the same zone. Will the gates let me out do we think? I am loath to purchase 2 singles due to the extra (on top of already exorbitant cost) and also because if I get away early enough I will be doing a straight return journey...

As long as the return station is closer to the destination and on the same route it shouldn't be a problem.

I do this all the time for Theale-Paddington-Reading

Well, ish.

It's Bromley to Luton to Croydon. I wouldn't say it's closer but both are zone 5 I think...

Bromley, Kent ? Or Bromley by Bow?

Bromley Kent. I found a return to/from LUL Zones 1-6, but it's really ambiguous...

Be careful: there was a case recently of a man who IIRC got off the train at Preston when he had a ticket for Lancaster (despite the Lancaster train having to stop at Preston en route to Lancaster) and Virgin came after him for fraud because there was differential pricing on the line.

I'd ask the railway company.

Yeah, I just read something about that. I know East Croydon is gated so I bet the barrier won't let me through and I'll get done for travelling without a ticket. It's BS because they are the same price!

You can get a LU Zone 1-5 to Luton return which is about the same price. Is that gonna work?

Travelcard gives unlimited travel within the zones and from/to the start station. You just have to convince the ticket office to sell it (you could buy online)

Hmmm, just tried buying that ticket using the trainline app and it told me that my "journey arrangement fee is not correct" FFS.

Giving, up, going to bed, hopefully the ticket office will be open...

How bizarre. Just got a zone 5 to Luton return for £21 from the station. Ticket person double checked and said it was fine even though putting it through from the station itself was £34. We will see what happened when I try to get through the barriers at East Croydon this afternoon...

Can't recall, but a subsequent post suggests that the problem is common.

I guess the problem is not so much win or lose - with a bit of persistence you can often get these things overturned, but just the b*llsache of, and time devoted to, dealing with the spivs who run privatised infrastructure.

Probably easier to speak to the person at the ticket counter if you can, rather than trying to book it online.

Or, which is the "common" station on the trip in London where you diverge to either Bromley or Croydon, use that as your start/end and then buy 2 short single trips?

I use that line from Orpington to get to Kentish Town sometimes.

Can't you just tap in with a debit card at Bromley South, tap out at Luton, then do the reverse but tapping out at Croydon, it'll work the rest out for you?

No, Luton is outside the Oyster zone so you can't travel with contactless

Fingers crossed a Z5-Luton ticket allows you to travel through zones 1 to 4..
