I know we had this thread several years ago but I would be interested in some more opinions...biggrin

Which would be harder to bend?

A hollow piece of scaffolding pipe or a solid steel bar the same diameter?

A mate of mine who owns a steel factory says the hollow pipe, but I'm not so sure....scratchchin

It depends what size of radius bend you are looking to pull.
A hollow tube on a tight 90 degree bend would just kink.

And a solid one would snap wouldnt it?

I think you could heat a solid one to bend it 90 degrees.

A hollow pipe can be bent using a mandrel bender to retain its shape.

i would say that depends on how you want to accomplish the bend

hollow scaffold PIPE in a pipe bender easy

hollow scaffold pipe a gas axe and a hammer also easy but no longer a pipe

Well maybe I should amend the question to which would be stronger if it had a heavy weight bearing down upon it.

It depends on the grade and hardness state of the solid bar.

If they are the same diameter then the bar is less likely to bend, if they are the same weight but different diameters, then the tube is stronger.

This. For the same weight, a bigger hollow tube will be stronger. If the material is the same and diameter the same (ie the solid tube is heavier) then the solid tube will be stronger.

Area moment of inertia is (Pi*r^4) / 4.

For the hollow pipe you subtract the internal space, therefore it is easier to bend. You can see from the above equation that increasing the radius has a large effect on the strength of the tube.

I used to be able to bend stuff like that over my c++k.............. but my wrists have gone a bit weak now.

This is exactly why I love PH hehe

Rub your finger and thumb over it a bit like Uri Geller does with spoons and both will bend as you like surely

If the pipe was on a conveyor belt, then definitely the solid bar.

Definitely European.

(No offence intended to African scaffolding, I'm sure it's very good)

You need to put a spring inside the tube to keep it from deforming, even I know that.
Or fill it with sand.
