What's that all about ? on holiday in Croatia with my wife, she seems intent on full thickness burns, swear I can hear and smell her roasting, it like a personal crusade.

Whole swathes of people who have breakfast, then do eight hours in full sun, all day for between seven and fourteen days.

Now, I don't mind a bit of sun, and have some pink bits to show for it but have retired to a shaded area, I tried the sunshade but it's difficult to get adequate cover for yourself without accidentally shading a bit of someone else, which just won't do.

I don't know how they do it, having some sun on your bones is good, but eight hours or more in full, intense sun, it is hot and boring, all to get a tan for a few weeks before returning to the normal Gollum-esque shade.

So, I slap on the factor thirty, one down from full welding gear and grim and bear it, oh, and drink, sun lotion existing is to me proof we are not meant to be out in it for prolonged periods.

The idea of lying by the pool sipping on a beer in the hot sun sounds lovely...Especially being a Monday. However the reality is after about an hour i'm bored stless.

I'd sooner get some colour walking around sightseeing.

Year, I went parasailing yesterday but the silly moo won't go out of the hotel.

A decent book or a few podcasts would solve the boredom problem. Or if you're too hot then swimming isn't a bad way of doing exercise and cooling down at the same time.

I tend to walk early and late, middle part of the day look for shady squares to wander around and sit in.

A decent book, an attentive bar staff and i'll sit by the pool all day.

Granted - doing 7 days is pushing a bit too far. I need to do 'something' while i'm on holiday.

Yeah, swam a mile or two yesterday snorkelling.

Just determined to not burn today, some look like they have been strapped to the Space Shuttles underside during re entry, some look like mahogany.

Agree with you both,

I'm more a cold holiday person (Skiing, Scotland site seeing etc) but alas my other half who prefers a hot holiday.
I can't begrudge her this as she puts up with me I suppose.

After about 10 minutes sitting in the sun I start to fidget, we've booked a week in Corfu for septmember as it won't go over 30c (this is the temperature I turn into victor meldrew)
I burn quite easily and work in an office so any prolonged exposure to vitamin D can be off putting hehe

(it will be nice to have a week off though)

Remember that sunburn and skin cancer can go hand in hand...

I don't understand lying there baking for the fun of it. Bring on the factor 50 for me please!

I never understand the concept of going on holiday to sit and read a book or listen to a podcast. I can do that at home. I go on holiday to do something fun that I can't do at home.

Luckily my Mrs isn't one for sitting in the sun for too long either. Went to Madeira last year and we usually went for a snorkel when we got back to the hotel and then sat in the sun for half an hour or so to dry off before dinner, and that was enough sun bathing for me biggrin

Some aqua aerobics going on, heralded by some euro dance type music, never saw the point of exercise in after, just makes you look like a horse being rehabilitated.

I can't remember the last time I lay down to sunbathe. I do get a tan from walking in the sun, driving with the roof down or playing tennis, though.

Sunbathing is a pointless waste of time. I'll be on the beach at Cap Ferret with the kids the week after next. We will spend our time body surfing, playing football or Frisbee, flying a kite and building sandcastles. Much more fun!

I don't mind lounging around in some warm weather. I would never, ever willingly lie in the sun though.

I don't trust sunscreen and I don't particularly want to do it either. Around 90% or more of my carcass has never received direct sun exposure in living memory.

As a result I am fluorescent white and don't have one single wrinkle to my name.

Hire a car and explore. Pretty country. Take a book, drive, find a nice café, watch the world from the shade.

If it's a convertible, you can catch a tan while enjoying the countryside at the same time.

True, but I find convertibles too hot in much of Europe in the heights of summer.
