Blummin' weddings!
Discussion
Just a rant because I'm fed up. I'm trying to organise my wedding and it's a nightmare. Registrar only available from X to Y. Venue can do this but not that. Mrs is trying to keep the costs down which is good, but if something costs more than expected she feels disappointed. Etc etc etc.
This is only the start...

Wedding organisation is a bother. Plenty of 'snags' and people not doing their job properly that you have to chase all the time. On the day itself, it goes so quickly that before you know it, it's all over.
Accept it's probably going to be expensive. There's always a 'wedding tax' mark up on everything.
Best of luck with things

Get the wife to be to organise it. It will mostly be what she wants to do anyway!
This is what my fiancé is doing, she knows I don't really care for all the details, so I let her get on with it. Food and booze I did get involved with, but beyond that as long as I know when and where I have to turn up I'm happy.Just wait until you find out how much more a cake is when it's called a wedding cake. You could assume it's mixed with whisks of pure gold and iced with unicorn jism, but in reality it's just a fruitcake someone's absolutely fleecing you for. In fact, add "wedding" to anything and it does anything from double to x10 in price.
I heard a tale (must be true therefore) of a local to me hotel restaurant taking a booking for 50 for an event, fixed price menu, pre-order, they'll lay on tables linen etc (as any restaurant would, you'd imagine). They then found it was a wedding and immediately wanted extra payments for table, chair and linen hire, cleaning of said linens, staffing costs, money for name-tags at seats, everything you could think of. If it had been a 50th birthday, all was well, but "because wedding"...
However, congratulations, and remember it's supposed to be a fun day for you and your missus, not something to keep the MIL happy/impress all her/your family and friends etc.
As long as the missus turns up, the best man doesn't reveal that secret, there's plenty to eat and drink, some music people can dance to and no-one punches anyone, it'll be fine. No-one remembers if the centre-piece of each table matched the napkins except your missus and the MIL.

Be prepared to do a lot yourself, of stupid things mainly, but ones that save small amounts of money that add up. This is only the start...
My now wife spotted some cute bird-cage style gift boxes for wedding favours. Made out of card, with some ribbon through them. £8 for 10 of them at a wedding fair, and we had 130 guests!
But we found the exact same ones in The Range or Dunhelm Mill (not the nicest shop but full of bargains) and they also came with place holder cards, pack of 20 of each for £2, but we had to do all the folding and threading ourselves. But we just did a packet each whilst watching whatever crap we watch on TV of an evening and they were all done, and "saved" us loads of money over what someone was selling at a huge markup having done the folding themselves.
But equally - you can get some good deals if you are prepared to make a deal on the spot. We hired a classical string duo for our ceremony and drinks reception - and by having the means to send them money on PayPal on the spot we got them for just over half their normal price when we saw them at a wedding fair and chatted with them for 15 minutes or so.
I found the process quite odd. We spent about 11 months planning it, and we had some very stressful moments because two of the event management staff left their jobs whilst planning - which was fine because they were useless to us, but then with 2 months to go, the senior events manager for the whole region became our direct contact, and after 30 minutes, all our concerns vanished, he knew everything, nothing at all phased him, and he didn't pressure us into spending any money as we had found at earlier venues we'd considered.
Final tip from me - The venue caterers made our wedding cake. Figured we were already spending a few grand with them, and there were then no issues with transporting it or having it delivered etc, it was on site. They made a "decorative" cake for us to cut, and then made a bigger cutting cake for everyone to have a slice of afterwards. A quarter of the price of the cheapest cake we had found from 3-4 other places we had enquired with.

I know someone who runs a hotel that does weddings and that's standard practice. Everything you could imagine about dealing with bridezillas and their mothers is true, no matter how much they insist at the beginning they want to keep it simple. Of course there will be exceptions but they're generally orders of magnitude more intense than doing a birthday meal. The other snag about keeping it simple is every wedding is a showcase for the hotel as many of the guess are potential customers. If it looks a bit crap it reflects badly on the hotel.
