Suppose, hypothetically, you find a pistol and ammunition in your attic, obviously hidden long ago by a previous resident.

Do you take it to the police or would you be worried about being done for possession if they don't believe you?

Probably keep it. Never wave it around or tell anyone. But if ISIS want to get all charlie-big-potatoes in rural aberdeenshire. I'll be ready to fk up their day.

Put it back where you found it and call the Police. Walking into your local nick, unnancounced, carrying a pistol is not going to make you any mates.

Honestly I'd probably keep it, and not tell anybody about it. I can't think of a foreseeable circumstance where I would be caught with it and I would rather have it than not have it if the unthinkable where to happen.

I've never quite agreed with how we handle gun laws and self defence in the UK so if the opportunity presented itself to have something stashed away I do think I would take it.

Reload times in a shotgun are too slow for me. A semi auto 9mm would be a better shout I think. wink

1 clean it
2 wrap in a oiled rag
3 clean and make sure ammunition is not starting to corrode
3.5 if a automatic remove ammunition from the magazine (you don't want to compress the spring)
4 protect both gun and ammunition from moisture damage
5 hide it away and never tell anyone about it even hypothetically

Let's assume something that fires live ammo, something like a Browning 9mm.

A mate found a revolver in the attic. I assume he handed it in. A previous owner probably had it for dispatching livestock. The gap between the chamber and barrel was alarming. Not a sophisticated bit of engineering.
