I'm looking to store a few small valuable sentimental items and I wondered if anyone has any experience of safety deposit boxes being offered by various providers (now that Bank's have mostly stopped offering them).

Is there anything in particular to look out for? Also, their websites mention insurance. Why would insurance be needed if storing items in such a box?

The difficulty is proviing the value of items that are stored after a loss, so you would need to have a valuation before the item goes into storage, and valuations do not take into account any family history.

An alternative may be to buy your own security box and fix it in a loft space, screwed down to the rafters. You can buy fire proof boxes with double locks for under £40

From experience, I would suggest that you do not give your address to the vendor if you buy it. Bought a floor mounted safe some years ago, two weeks after I bought it the house was broken into and the safe was opened, with a key.

That's generally a good plan with locks & anything else along those lines; don't get it sent to your house.

Try Switzerland?

You'll probably need I.D. in quadruplicate, fingerprinting, retinal bio-metric scans, and possibly a colonoscopy for good measure! As long as they stop short of a cranial implant GPS tracker, you'll be all right.

Although I sincerely hope the colonoscopy comes with appropriate sedative! biggrin
