My grandad always gave sound advice.

Always buy good speakers.

"Buy cheap, buy twice."

My mother only gave me one piece of advice - 'Life is too short to stuff your own olives'. Not sure if that was a metaphor or a literal instruction to use catering staff when entertaining.

The flying community has some good ones but my favourite (regarding decision making), "If there's a doubt, then there's no doubt"

Politeness costs nothing.

You can't put a value on morality

If it first you don't succeed try again.

Don't be a whiner, nobody likes whiners.

Be generous equally generous in defeat as victory, never gloat.

There are lots, I suppose.

"Never never never hand over a single share of anything you've created or acquired, if you can help it. Nothing. Not one share, to no one, no matter what the reason, unless you genuinely have to ... Ownership is the only thing that counts" --- Felix Dennis.

That's made me a little money, but infinitely more importantly, given me freedom.
