Well I've just had a rather more eventful Saturday afternoon shopping trip than usual...

My partner and I had been shopping for a few items in a nearby town centre and were on the way back to the car.

We were on a fairly quiet back street looking in a shop window and I became vaguely aware of a dodgy looking guy approaching from our right, swaying his way down the pavement. As he walked past behind us, he grabbed my partner's backpack and started (quite mildly tbh) pulling it about and saying 'wake up, wake up'. Obviously I asked him what the hell he was doing and got in between him and my OH. He then said 'do you know where you are' then , bizarrely, shook my hand, turned around and walked off.

Thinking that was the end of it, we just walked off in the opposite direction. He then started following us from a distance, shouting abuse. We kept walking, but he then sped up and got quite close behind us. I turned around to the cretin with his fists up coming at me.

He threw a couple of pretty ineffective punches one of which glanced across my throat, but he was clearly no Tyson, so I just grabbed him by the shirt and threw him away with some force into a billboard. He hit the deck then started bleating that he hadn't done anything wrong!

We walked off again, to the distant shouts of him calling me a wker. He didn't follow us again.

Would you call the police and report this to cover yourself, or just get on with your day?

(No. You can't see any pictures of my girlfriend you bunch of deviants).

Drunk, high or mental health issues.

I wouldn't report it - in the extremely unlikely event of him reporting it, who are they going to believe..?

Personally I'd just move on. You have each other as a witness in the highly unlikely event that anything ever comes of it.

Only thing missing was landing one on him properly en route to the ground.

Report the person, not the incident.

They're a risk to themselves and others.

Personally I would report it on the non-emergency to the extent of awareness for the police and emergency services and for their knowledge as someone else in the same situation in the same place may not have the same result

I'd report it to 101, he's probably done the same to others.

It crossed my mind, but didn't see the need really, he'd struggle to fight his way out of a wet paper bag by the look of him. 'Well nourished' wouldn't be the first word that popped into your head to describe him.

Almost certainly. Most likely the first two.

Unfortunately, there are now so many people roaming the streets with "issues" that its becoming everyday occurrence.

I start work early in the morning and, although I only live in a sleepy west country town, I quite often see about 10-12 people in various doorways ( some just up and shouting /ranting) along the main routes in town.

Whats weird is that when I was a kid ( now mid 40's) you only ever saw tramps/gentlemen of the road, and by and large they were no bother but, I think we are now seeing, in particular, kids who grew up in 90s' in dysfunctional homes and now we are seeing the results.

Its sad and cant see it being sorted anytime soon.

Druggie from the sounds of it. He probably saw 2 polar bears walking down the street, one of which had a back pack on made of cheese burgers and he felt hungry.

I think probably because it was such a bizarre encounter it caught me off guard. It's hard to explain, but the first part of it was just weird - it didn't really feel threatening, more like he was messing around.

I could tell he was in no condition for a fight, he couldn't really focus on me. I don't consider it very sporting to beat up someone who can't really defend themselves properly, even if they are being a tt.
