Seems a stupid question, but what county is Peterborough in?

Wikipedia says it is in Cambridgeshire, but if i look at cambridgeshire on Google Maps or Google Earth it shows the county border as being to the south of Peterborough.
Likewise, Leicestershire's border shows as to the north of the city, and Cambridgeshire's is to the west.

It's as if Peterborough is in some sort of county black hole...

So on that basis, it's in Cambridgeshire then :-)

Odd innit? I believe Bristol is also a county for administrative purposes isn't it?

And "Greater Manchester". Although I wouldn't want to be part of Lancashire either so I can see where they're coming from.

What IS a "county", really, these days?

Peterborough City Council is a unitary authority - it's the only level of local government between the residents and Westminster. There is no County Council involved.

So is it "in" any county? Are many cities?

There are County Councils, Unitary Authorities, MBCs and all sorts. I lose touch.

Some counties are basically ceremonial.

Others have districts under a wider county council (Worcestershire) and some only have a county council (herefordshire)

England is the most almighty tangle and an administrative level.

If Peterborough gets a Royal visit, who is the Lord Lieutenant who stands as the queens representative

That is the big decider

And I wouldn't be surprised if the Post Office think it's in Cornwall.

Yes, that's definitely the single most important factor...

I live in Cambridgeshire, and this year we got one of the new fangled combined authorities, with an elected mayor - the "Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, which suggests Peterborough has always been some kind of anomaly, separate form the rest of the county. Which is probably how most Cambridgeshire residents regard it anyway.

When you leave Lincolnshire you are welcomed into Cambridgeshire just south of Deeping. We used to be in Huntingdonshire, it's most confusing...

Peterborough.... not close enough to Birmingham to be convenient but far enough away from London to be a nuisance.

He was from Wisbech and the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.

I'm from Market Deeping in Peterborough but our local council is South Kesteven in Lincolnshire.

Dave!
