I tend to fixate a lot on my work (especially academically). One of my teachers recently said to me that I need to 'get a life', he didn't say it in a mean way and I could tell it was advice my main question here relates to below.

One of the students in my class wrote about it on Twitter (they didn't name me)

They simply said along the lines of 'when a teacher tells student to #get a life it makes everyone feel awkward'.

I don't follow this person directly - one of their followers (whom I follow and is also in my class for this subject) retweeted this, hence I saw it. It was only retweeted once.

I sort of struggle to understand the meaning of the tweet, especially the feel akward bit. Is it like they are laughing at me by writing it, or does the 'awkward' bit sugest sympathy and is being supportive?

I feel more annoyed/upset about the person in my class writing about it on Twitter than the comments of my teacher themselves.

Is the tweet supportive or are they laughing at me/making fun of me by posting about it on Twitter?

No idea what you're talking about, is this an English class you're taking?

I would read that as your fellow students feeling it's inappropriate for a teacher to say something like 'get a life' and made them feel awkward on your behalf. It sounds like they're in support of you and not of the teacher's comment.

And as HedgeyGedgey says, don't worry about what others think of you. Most people in your life will be transient and in 'x' years' time you'll struggle to name most of them. What someone else thinks of you doesn't matter so don't let it affect you.

The get a life comment from a teacher to a student is unprofessional and pejorative.

That aside the tweet #GetALife and the comment #MakesEveryoneFeelAwkward if a criticism of the teacher not you.

If all else fails point out that for most married people 'going out' means shopping and that you'll get a life once you have the grades you need to do awesome stuff.

It is just a case of your fellow student being offended on your behalf

This.
I am one who took this sort of thing to heart at school, until i realised the only person it was affecting was me. I stopped caring about that sort of thing, i had an easier time of life.
No point in stressing, just make a mental note not to share anything personal with the person who tweeted, as they would probably tweet that too.

I would advise not to give it too much thought. The person is using the tweet for their own attention, as the intention of most tweets.

The whole #awkward thing is just an overused phrase now and I wouldn't read too much into it.

I suppose if you'd gone above and beyond on a piece of work, then the comment could be taken as a compliment. As in "I wasn't expecting this much time to be spend on it, you need to get out more."

It's only as complicated as one chooses to make it.

OP, the real issue here is whatever unresolved (undiagnosed?) illness is causing you to allow a tweet to bother you for more than about 0.3 of a second.

This isn't some macho, internet hardman bullspit (although someone, as inevitably as night follows day, will read it that way), if you're getting yourself this het up about something that a stranger said on the internet which may or may not have had absolutely nothing to do with you, you could probably benefit from seeking out someone (anyone, but not PH ideally) to speak with about how you can move on from things like this more easily.

I myself find that exposure therapy works. The more nonsense I read (like a lot of the ludicrous opinions on The Internet), the less it bothers me and the less I dispair.

I can diagnose it for you in about 0.3 of a second - it's called 'being a teenager'. We've all been there to some extent.

If I were you, I wouldn't give a fk about it. The first phrase that came to mind was 'get a life'...

I don't think it is possible to tell whether it's supportive, mean or neither.

Most likely it's an observation that when a teacher tells a student to get a life, it's a bit of an awkward thing for anyone to hear as not something you'd expect to hear from a teacher to a student.

But, with the above said, it's best not to concern yourself with a tweet that nobody other than you will remember tomorrow anyway.

Read "Deep Work" by Cal Newport.

It'll help you ignore such things, they're not important.

And being bothered enough about it to post it on the internet, in conjunction with a general 'worrying' about things ?

Reacting this strongly to a single, completely unremarkable tweet is not 'being a teenager' and brushing it off as such is almost certainly as bad an idea as ignoring that new and slightly painful lump on your testicles.

Can’t you retreat to the uni/college/school “safe space” and stay there ?

Better take the offended fellow student with you too for good measure.

Whatever you do, don’t expose yourself to the workplace or you’ll have worried yourself into your grave in no time!
