I was having a bit of a difficult time with my studies and recently and spoke of my feelings on one of my social media accounts. One of the people who I knew from school responded saying 'If/when you are home we should meet. Your choice though. I wont force you wink '.

I have wrote a few similar threads on here before, as I have Aspergers and can struggle to interpret some things. In this case, it is the ' wink ' emoticon which I am finding difficult to interpret and how it relates to 'I won't force you'.

Please can you help me interpret what this means in this context?

It's an offer of help, but they don't want you to feel obligated into meeting them if you don't want their help. So either say yes please or say thanks for your kind offer, but I'll leave it for now.

Thanks for replying and helping me to understand. Why did he use the winking emoticon -wouldn't a smiley face have been more appropriate in this case?

Personally in this context I would ignore the icon altogether and make my decision whether I wanted to meet up, or not.

One of the problems with smiley/winking icons is that they can be misused, mis typed or even misunderstood by the sender. The only person who can answer what was meant, if anything, is the person who sent the text. Therefore ignore it and either meet, or not, depending upon whether you want to.

Totally agree with this - very subjective.

That's about the size of it. I think the wink is their way of saying they know how you feel about these sort of things so don't feel obligated.
