What was the oldest generation of ancestor that had a representative still living when you were born?

The oldest living male ever on my fathers side (before my father) only made it to 43 ... currently every day my father lives extends this as he is 70 in a couple of weeks time - quite a scary stat really!

My great grandmother was born in the 1890's and was still alive when I was born in 1987. She died around 1990 I think. I have no recollection of her, to be fair I can't remember much before around 1993/1994.

Can you clarify (because I'm thick!) - do you mean blood ancestor rather than via marriage and when you say "representative" do you mean a child (i.e. the ancestor is one of their parents)?

Only asking because I reckon mine might be quite old! What's yours?

I've read that several times and I don't understand whether you mean:

  • My great-great-gran was 120 years old when I was born
  • My mum had me when she was 15 and her mum had her when she was 15 and so on so my great-great-great-great-gran was 60 when I was born?

I mean blood ancestor as opposed to via marriage or great uncles etc. By representative I just mean one of that generation. IE At least one survivor of: 2 parents or 4 grandparents or 8 great fgrandparents.
Perhaps member would have been a better word but surviving siblings of your grand parents don't count.

Yes, my great grandfather was about 43 when he died in 1900, he had been born in Ireland.

My Grandfather was 62 when I was born in 1970, he was still around 27 years later when my son was born.
Also I had an "auntie" that was brought up by my mums grandmother ( she was definitely a relative but we dont know exactly who her parents were), she was born in the 1890's and I remember her when I was a kid

Just my maternal grandmother, she was born in 1885.

By coincidence, same year as my paternal grandfather, died in 1935.

Did a family tree last year, got back to 1550, found a few people who lived into their 90s in the 1700s but Victorian industrialisation in the West Midlands brought life expectancy right down, in my family, to early 50s.

My great grandma was born in 1866 and was still alive when I was born in 1957, as far as I can think she was the oldest.

That's impressive, do they have any great great grandchildren?

I have a friend who is 53 and a great grandmother. Her Dad is in his mid 70s which makes him a great great grandfather.
I don’t think their family had TVs.

None of the above. I lost a Great Aunt probably 15 years ago, she was 109. The oldest woman in East Anglia, and not many years off being the oldest alive in the UK.

She lived in three consecutive centuries, Queen Victoria was in reign when she was a little girl, she was 'middle aged' by world war two, and lived to see countless life changing inventions. As PH'ers, the car was only invented in 1885. When she was born the car had probably only been around for 8 years. A 3 wheel Benz, with a single figure BHP, being led by a man with a flag would be the only car around then!

When anyone asks me why I gave up smoking (20+ P/D) last year, age then 39, I state her. With family genes like that I don't want to be the black sheep that dies of lung cancer in his 60's, 50 years premature.
