Staying in a hotel for work just now and each night I get a wee old woman come to the door asking if I require a turn down service.

Honestly what the censored actually I'm raging here at having to answer the door for such a daft service.

I then get to hear her make her way along the corridor doorstepping people and getting told where to go at each stop.

Absolutely pointless. I'm a able person, why is some old woman being made go ask if I need me bed sheets put in the open position confused

Please don't evade the swear filter it's there for a purpose!

At least it's named appropriately.

If done right, it can be quite useful. They will leave clean towels, more soap, or free chocolate.

You need to get some perspective ... “raging” ... ludicrous

I recommend never staying in a Mandarin Oriental hotel with twice daily housekeeping and “full turn down service” offered plus all the other niceties like shoe polishing at your room via a little “shoe door”

What's the difference between a turndown service and the maids coming in to make the beds, replace the towels, top up the tea/coffee/minibar etc?

I normally expect it to be done every day. AIBU?

Cheeky feckers could have at least given you a new bottle or even just a smaller bottle, but just half a bottle of it, taking the mick (or the champers)

Never get annoyed, although on our last foreign holiday our daughter was not lasting much beyond 7.30 so I don't think we ever saw turndown....

The maid service in the morning is to “make” the bed so that it is presentable during the day. The turn down service is to move the bed from the presentable for the Day state to a state ready to be slept in. It’s a very poncy procedure which is only really practiced in the best hotels these days.

Since joining Match. com, I've found loads of women offering this service absolutely free of charge.

Thanks. That explains why I've never come across it.

Turn down is performed in the evening, they turn down the bedding and often leave a small gift or chocolates. Some may leave slippers or a night mask

The origins of it are from the days of grand houses and hotels where the servants would have to warm the bed with bedpans for the master in the days before central heating
