I received an email and a text message this morning to say my parcel would be delivered today. Brilliant!

A couple of hours later I got another email and text message saying my parcel had been delivered to myself or a neighbours address. Ok, that means I've given my home address rather than my work address for delivery. Not the end of the world. Sounds like they've found someone that's home so I can grab it when I get in.

I've just got home and surprise surprise there's no card been left by Royal Mail. I've knocked on a couple of neighbours doors and they haven't taken anything in for me today! So I go back into Royal Mails website to see what I can do in this situation. There answer. Speak to the seller and check they gave the correct address. Seeing as it's gone 7pm the seller understandably has shut up shop for the day. I managed to find Royal Mails telephone number. Great! Oh, but they go home at 5.45pm before anyone can get home to discover no parcel or card.

So I'm currently £40 out of pocket, no idea where my parcel might be and I'm going to have to try and find ten minutes tomorrow to stop what I'm doing and call Royal Mail (and probably the seller) to find out where my parcel is.

Royal Mail are great aren't they. Aren't they?

If spending 10 mins to ring someone is the biggest of your problems then life can't be that bad. It's probably taken you longer to write this than ring the seller and check the address....

Something almost similar happened to us.

We lived in a house developed in a backyard of another house. Our road frontage was a paid of double gates, which were closed. We had a card in our postbox to say left behind the tree. There was no tree that postman could reach.....

Spoke to our postmaster, who collared the postie, who then retrieved the parcel from behind next doors tree...

I was sent a bunch of medical photographs, A4 jobbies on swish glossy photo paper, in one of the RM branded card A4 brown envelopes with 'Do Not Bend' on it in red RM font.

Yup, bent double and pushed through the letterbox.

Utterly useless.

Royal Mail are fantastic. Try living in some overseas areas then you will soon see how bad things are .lucky if you receive anything at all, and even if you do your package or envelope will already have been opened and anything of value taken.
Believe me the RM success rate of getting sh*t to you ain’t so bad

We send several sacks of mail every day with them and their loss rates and speed of delivery are both fantastic, in our experience.

Your mileage may vary.

I find Royal Mail pretty good. It's Parcel Force that are useless. Told me that they had attempted a delivery at a time when I was in. Funnily enough, no card left, quite clearly they had never been near my place.

Best thing to do to track a parcel like this is to speak to the manager of your local delivery office. I know it's more complicated than calling the customer services central number, but they can bring up the details of the parcel that was scanned, including the GPS coordinates, provided the systems are all playing nicely.

Will get you a faster result than going round the houses with customer services.

We've had items like this addressed wrongly, sent to old addresses and all sorts of things (including feckless posties) but getting the manager to check the tracking information in front of you should yield results.

Fully agree. Somewhere down the line knocking them became a national sport.

Surely everyone can track a tracked item?

You just go on the website and stick the number in .

You said you got a text to say it was delivered to yours or a neighbours address , are you sure?

Once we've scanned the item we either select delivered to address or delivered to a neighbour there's no way we can send it thru as both .

It's standard practice for posties, when seeing an envelope with "Photographs- do not bend" to say "oh yes they do," and bend them to prove the point.

And when they read that their apprentices should get first hand job experience, what do they do then?

A bit quick to blame Royal Mail when you don’t even know if the sender put the correct address on the parcel.

I suggest you never use Yodel on a regular basis. Their incompetence is amazingly professional.

One thing about Yodel is their consistent ability to get it wrong on every level. I've only ever seen a HGV in the third lane of a three lane motorway once in over 25 years as a road user and guess what? It was a Yodel HGV...
