Hi All,

My two boys (15 & 12) are looking forward to spending the morning with me the Friday before Christmas (22nd).

To make it a bit more memorable, I was thinking of booking a car park space below our office in Canary Wharf and driving through London (from Maidenhead Berkshire) in one of the Porsches.

So is driving to and from Canary Wharf to Maidenhead (near Windsor) going to be a total nightmare the Friday before Christmas???!!!

Sod it - they're only young once (saying that they're probably a bit older than the usual kids in the office @ Xmas)

Get em up early, drive to office, have somewhere booked (as the usual office laid on entertainment can be a bit lame/aimed at younger kids) for lunch (Goodmans is always a good shout ...... !!)

If they moan about the early start - tell them you're preparing them for life after school.

I think you'd need a *really* early start for the drive to be remotely enjoyable - on the road before 6am.

I often go from the SE up to the M11, so past CW and after about 6am it's busy and after 6.30 or 7 and you might as well wait until 10am. Driving home will be a chore too.

Personally I wouldn't do it. Take them on the train and go and chat Porsche London by the airport into letting you try something new.

+1

Maybe book a slot at the Vanguard helipad and take the helicopter instead.

Well it won’t be quick, but if you’re not in a rush it’ll be fine

Will it be that interesting a drive though? Might see the Tower, Houses of Parliament, not much else, unless you go a circuitous route..

*Don't drive*

Take a train to Waterloo, and from there the River Bus.

http://canarywharf.com/getting-here/river-bus/

If you have to drive, only go as far as Waterloo. There's a car park there, 20 quid per day, and you can check online availability.

https://www.visitorparking.co.uk/?carpark=waterloo...

Should be a pleasant experience for the kids, better than sitting potentially 3 hours+ each way in the car, even if it's a Porsche...

Getting in might not be too bad if you clear Heathrow by 630. Getting back might be the issue!

I used to do Theale to Kensington a couple of times a week and it was a bit of a lottery.

is it going to be that busy? I'm not even in that day so I'd of thought quite a few firms would be shut that day too.

Do kids get that excited about this stuff? I dunno - i'm asking because I hated getting up early at that age and didn't appreciate cars in the same way. My dad once took me for a hoon on snowy roads in a Mini (original) and that was exciting.

Actually I might do Liverpool Street with the girlfriend. In an MX-5. Okay, it doesn't have the flat-six bragging rights but it is an occasion.

Hey kids, great news! To really kick off your Christmas in style, I'm going to get you up at 0500 and wedge three of us into a car designed for two and we can spend 3 hours stuck in traffic in order to pay £450 for a couple of hours parking and a mediocre lunch, followed by a look around daddy's beige accountancy office. Then, just when you think the fun has stopped, we can pour ourselves back into the inappropriate car and spend another 3 hours sat in traffic to get home.

If you want them to like you, take the porn filter off the computer and let them smoke marijuana in the back garden.

Slightly more seriously: a b-road blast or even a track day would be miles more fun and a much better use of 'one of the Porsches'. Christ, rent the whole place and get them behind the wheel, that's a Christmas to remember for a 14-year old.

Better solution would be for OP to move to the north east before Xmas, you could take a job in a charity shop or perhaps Greggs if you’re really lucky.

Your commute time will be about 15 minutes though. I’m sure that helps! wink
