Those of us of a certain age will remember a certain Mr. Fred Dibnah.

He was a man whom appeared to have the biggest pair of balls and the link will confirm just that...........!

balls of steel

4:09 is moment of......ohhhhhh shiiiiittttttt.......

I’m not sure he could get away with this today, I’m not even sure there are any professions that’s get near to the danger this guys placed himself in almost on a daily basis?

Edited to add he had NO ROPE attached, simply his skill at not dying on that day!

Climbing up the ladders is (relatively) easy. Putting the ladders up there in the first place is what takes the balls and skill.

Fred was an incredible bloke.

Petrifying to watch.

I cannot fathom how those ladders got there in the first place, would be fascinated to see the set up.

Try this

Laddering a chimney

They just don’t make ‘em like they used to!

Here you go, how he put the ladders up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F04dGK1_wYA

4lb lump hammer in one hand, 12' plank in the other, and 3 or 4 pints over lunch.

Essentially everything is strung together with rope and held on the chimney with a few wedges

The predecessor to Guy Martin? Not the subject matter exactly, Civil engineering as opposed to vehicle engineering, but more the style and enthusiasm that goes in to it.
Or if you're from down south: Both odd northeners

I think that sums it up yes

A wooden ladder, a few pieces of rope, mahoosive balls of steel and an older man who is there to help pulling up the ladders and concentrate ‘not looking at the skirt’ hehe

Going up would be beyond me; but the idea of being up there and having to climb down makes my blood run cold. Not a hope in hell of doing that...

Go and find recordings of him dropping chimneys.
The only time I saw him even mildly anxious was running away from a dropping chimney that moved quicker than planned .

The guys free-climbing the very top part of 1000+ foot radio towers in the US is petrifying to watch.

I can't watch the guys changing the lightbulbs!

Yeah I'd say a lot of trad and solo climbers do hairier stuff than Fred, then you've got nutters like Alain Robert and all the youtube kids who've grown up thinking that he was somehow normal. But back then I'm sure he was in a pretty tiny minority.

Don't people still climb cranes, etc, without safety lines?
